SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 is the SIST adoption of the ETSI standard for environmental engineering of telecommunications equipment. It specifies environmental test methods and severities for equipment installed in ground vehicles, so designers, test labs, and buyers can check whether equipment is fit for the conditions it will face in service.

What does SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 specify?

SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 specifies test methods and severities for verifying the required resistibility of telecommunications equipment against the environmental conditions for ground vehicle installations. It applies to equipment installed permanently or temporarily in vehicles and to the environmental classes defined in EN 300 019-1-5.

The document covers vehicles powered by electric motors and combustion engines, but it excludes applications in combustion engine compartments. It is organized into a scope, references, environmental test specifications, notes to the tables, and Annex A with a bibliography.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ABibliography

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006?

The standard’s main job is to map vehicle environments to test severities and test methods. Clause 3 gives two test specifications - T 5.1 for protected installation and T 5.2 for partly protected installation - and Tables 1 to 3 set out the applicable climatic and mechanical tests.

Test planning and specimen condition

Clause 3 states that the equipment under test is normally assumed to remain in operational state during the tests unless stated otherwise. The product specification has to define the performance to measure before, during, and after testing, together with pass/fail criteria. In practice, this means the test plan must say what “working correctly” means for the product.

Clause 3 also says input and load conditions should be chosen to fully utilize the equipment under test, and heat dissipation should be maximized except in the steady-state low-temperature test, where it should be minimized. This matters because the test has to stress the equipment in a way that reflects real use.

T 5.1 protected installation

Clause 3.1 and Table 1 cover protected installation in weatherprotected heated locations. The climatic programme includes cold, dry heat, temperature change, humidity, air pressure, speed, water effects, solar radiation, chemically active substances, mechanically active substances, flora and fauna, and contaminating fluids.

For the reader, the important point is that many environmental factors are listed with “none” or “no” for routine verification, while others point to a specific IEC 60068-2 method. The notes explain when a condition is considered by design rather than by a separate test.

T 5.2 partly protected installation

Clause 3.2 and Table 3 cover partly protected installation, including use in vehicles with or without developed road systems depending on the selected IEC mechanical class. Compared with T 5.1, it includes more severe low-temperature conditions and adds a rain test using IEC 60068-2-18 Method 1.2.

This section matters when the equipment is less sheltered and may face direct weather exposure. A buyer or engineer can use it to choose the right environmental class before ordering or qualifying the product.

Mechanical testing

Tables 2 and 2a give the mechanical test specifications for both T 5.1 and T 5.2, aligned with IEC Class 5M2 and IEC Class 5M3. They cover vibration, shock, and bump, with random vibration preferred over sinusoidal vibration in the notes.

In practice, this is the part that checks how the equipment survives vehicle motion, impacts, and repeated jolts. The notes also explain that the severities are given as peak values and that bump testing is added because repeated shocks are expected.

What terms does SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 define?

  • Resistibility - the ability of telecommunications equipment to withstand the specified environmental conditions and still meet its intended performance.
  • Protected installation - equipment used in weatherprotected heated locations in vehicles.
  • Partly protected installation - equipment used in vehicles where exposure is less sheltered and may include weather exposure.
  • Operational state - the state in which the equipment is expected to remain during the test unless the specification says otherwise.
  • Acceleration Spectral Density (ASD) - the random vibration measure used in Tables 2 and 2a.
  • Characteristic severity - the environmental level chosen in the tables as the reference severity for a condition.

Who uses SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006?

Telecommunications equipment designers use it to select materials, enclosure design, and cooling or sealing approaches for vehicle-mounted products. Test laboratories use it to set up environmental qualification and verification programmes. Quality managers and buyers use it to specify the right environmental class when they procure equipment for ground vehicles.

It is also relevant for teams working on equipment that may be installed permanently or temporarily in vehicles powered by electric motors or combustion engines.

What changed in SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 from the previous edition?

The document history shows the progression from ETS 300 019-2-5 (Edition 1, May 1994) to V2.1.2 and then to V3.0.0. The page identifies SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 as identical to EN 300 019-2-5 Version 3.0.0.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006?

  • EN 300 019-1-5 - defines the environmental classes and conditions for ground vehicle installations that this part tests against.
  • IEC 60068-2 (all parts) - provides the environmental test methods used throughout the climatic and mechanical tables.
  • ETS 300 019-2-0 - gives the general overview of Part 2 and helps place this sub-part in the full series.

What does the SIST EN 300 019-2-5 V3.0.0:2006 document contain?

The document contains the scope, references, environmental test specifications, and notes that explain why specific tests are recommended or omitted. Tables 1, 2, 2a, and 3 are the core of the document because they link each environmental condition to a test method and severity.

It also includes detailed notes for interpreting temperature, humidity, water, solar radiation, contamination, vibration, shock, and bump conditions. Annex A provides a bibliography for further reading.
