Overview

FprEN IEC 63522-4:2024 (Dielectric strength test) defines a standard method to verify the dielectric withstand capability of electrical relays. The standard is intended to assess insulation integrity between circuits, across open contacts and between windings under conditions representative of transportation, storage and operational use. The objective is a repeatable, internationally aligned test procedure to detect flashover, breakdown and insufficient insulation performance.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Establishes a standardized dielectric strength (withstand) test for relays to confirm insulation sufficiency.
  • Pre‑conditioning: Where required, specimens are preconditioned by
    • Dry heat: 55 °C ±2 K for 48 h (IEC 60068-2-2)
    • Damp heat: 25 °C ±5 K, RH 91–95 % for 48 h with no condensation (IEC 60068-2-67)
  • Test voltage and duration
    • AC sinusoidal at power frequency (45–65 Hz; typically 50 Hz or 60 Hz); DC may be used equal to the AC peak value.
    • Nominal durations: 1 min (standard) or 1 s (permissible if voltage increased to 110 %).
    • No flashover or breakdown allowed; leakage current limited (permitted current ≤ 3 mA in normal tests).
  • Test setup and terminals
    • Specifies which terminals to stress (contact circuits, coil-to-contact, separate windings, exposed conductive parts simulated by foil, etc.).
    • Special components (LEDs, varistors, free‑wheeling diodes) may be disconnected, bridged or removed to make the test practical.
  • Voltage quality and equipment
    • Voltage waveform: substantially sinusoidal with THD < 5 %; peak/rms ratio √2 ±3 %.
    • Tolerance ±3 % on measured test voltage.
    • Test equipment in line with IEC 61180 and IEC 60060-1; generator current and drop performance defined (see Annex A, Table A.1).
  • Evaluation and reporting
    • Test report must record specimen description, test voltage, duration, and-if breakdown occurs-breakdown voltage and breakdown time, plus any observations (Annex T).

Applications and users

  • Relay manufacturers validating product insulation and design compliance.
  • Test laboratories performing dielectric withstand, type or routine testing.
  • OEMs and system integrators specifying relay acceptance criteria for safety-critical equipment.
  • Certification bodies and compliance engineers assessing conformity to IEC standards and environmental robustness.

Related standards

  • IEC 61810‑1 and IEC 61810‑7‑0 (general relay requirements and test guidance)
  • IEC 60060‑1, IEC 61180 (high‑voltage test techniques and equipment)
  • IEC 60068 series (environmental preconditioning)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, th
