Overview
SIST EN IEC 63522-54:2025, published by CLC, defines the standard test method for the critical DC load current test on electrical relays. This standard focuses on evaluating the performance and reliability of various types of electrical relays-such as electromechanical, reed, and solid-state relays-under operational, storage, and transportation conditions. It sets requirements and procedures to assess their ability to switch critical direct current loads safely and effectively, ensuring robust operation in real-world applications.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability: This standard applies broadly to all electrical relays used in DC applications, including time relays and technology combinations. It targets relays operating under conditions that may differ from general use, ensuring that they can handle critical DC load currents without compromising performance.
Test Procedure: The procedure involves subjecting relays to DC currents at various levels (4 A, 8 A, 16 A, 32 A, and 63 A DC), with operations repeated to identify the maximum current they can switch safely (the critical current). Test specifications include:
- Operating at maximum rated DC voltage
- Conducting ten operations per current value, splitting operations into forward and reverse current flow where polarity is not fixed
- Monitoring and recording arcing time during switching
- Conditions such as test temperature, current direction, closing time, and mounting direction specified by the manufacturer or standardized parameters
Evaluation Criteria: The arcing time-the duration of electrical discharge during switching-must not exceed 1 second at the critical current. A reliability test of 50 repeated operations at this current ensures consistent performance. Following this test, dielectric strength is verified according to IEC 63522-4 to confirm insulation integrity.
Operational Conditions: Test conditions reflect challenging operational environments, including different mounting directions and the presence of fault current protection devices. The standard also defines the number of allowable operating cycles per hour based on the relay’s rated current, ensuring tests simulate realistic usage scenarios.
Applications
The EN IEC 63522-54 standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and users of electrical relays, providing a rigorous benchmark to:
- Qualify Electrical Relays for DC Load Applications: Ensuring relays can switch direct current loads safely in industrial, transportation, and storage scenarios.
- Guarantee Relay Durability and Safety: Preventing relay failures, reducing downtime, and extending operational lifetimes under critical DC conditions.
- Support Compliance and Certification: Aiding compliance with international electrotechnical requirements and improving customer confidence in product quality.
- Guide Design and Engineering: Helping engineers optimize relay designs for reliable performance in harsh environments or specialized applications.
Related Standards
SIST EN IEC 63522-54:2025 complements several parts of the IEC 63522 series focused on relay testing and measurements, including:
- IEC 63522-0 – General and guidance on electrical relay tests and measurements
- IEC 63522-4 – Dielectric strength test specifications for electrical relays
- IEC 63522-10 – Heating tests relevant to relay operation under load
These related standards collectively ensure comprehensive testing-covering mechanical, electrical, and environmental aspects-to verify relay safety, reliability, and performance.
By adhering to SIST EN IEC 63522-54:2025, organizations benefit from a standardized approach to evaluating electrical relays’ critical DC load handling, promoting product excellence and enhanced operational safety in numerous electrotechnical applications.

Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
