a) gostoti,
b) prostorninskem pretoku taline
Če so take dodatne lastnosti zahtevane, jih je treba določiti v skladu s preskusnimi metodami

Overview

EN ISO 17855-1:2014 - Plastics: Polyethylene (PE) moulding and extrusion materials - Part 1 defines a standardized designation system and basis for specifications for polyethylene thermoplastic materials. It creates a clear, machine- and human-readable format to identify PE grades (homopolymers and ethylene copolymers with <50% other 1‑olefins and ≤3% non‑olefinic functional monomers) in the form of powder, granules or pellets, unmodified or with colorants, additives, fillers or reinforcements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Designation structure: A standardized identity block and an individual-item block subdivided into five data blocks (positions separated by commas). The individual-item block starts with a hyphen; unused blocks are shown as two commas (,,).
  • Data block 1: Polymer type symbol (PE‑VLD, PE‑LD, PE‑LLD, PE‑MD, PE‑HD) per ISO 1043‑1.
  • Data block 2: Fillers/reinforcements and form using code letters (e.g., glass fibres, talc, metal), optionally followed by mass content.
  • Data block 3: Primary application or processing method (position 1) and up to seven positions for important properties, additives and colour (positions 2–8) using standardized code letters (e.g., extrusion, injection moulding, stabilised, nucleated, coloured).
  • Data block 4: Designatory properties - density (2‑figure code) and melt mass‑flow rate (MFR) (code letter + 3‑figure number) separated by hyphens. Values near range limits require manufacturer clarification.
  • Data block 5: Optional additional specification data for procurement or quality control (e.g., test criteria).
  • Limitations: Does not apply to masterbatches, EPM rubber or PE‑UHMW (see ISO 11542‑1). The designation system does not guarantee identical performance - additional property testing (ISO 1872‑2, ISO 1133‑1, ISO 1183 series) may be required.

Practical applications

  • Standardized labelling of PE grades on data sheets and certificates of conformity.
  • Creating unambiguous procurement specifications and supply‑chain communication between resin producers, compounders, converters (injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion) and OEMs.
  • Basis for quality control, lot tracing and material selection when specifying density and MFR classes for processing behaviour.
  • Useful for product developers, regulatory documentation and contract specifications where a consistent PE designation is required.

Who uses this standard

  • Resin manufacturers and compounders
  • Material engineers, product designers and converters (moulding/extrusion shops)
  • Quality assurance and procurement teams
  • Test laboratories and standards bodies

Related standards

  • ISO 1043‑1 (polymer symbols)
  • ISO 1133‑1 (MFR/MVR determination)
  • ISO 1183 series (density methods)
  • ISO 1872‑2 (test specimen preparation and property determination)
  • ISO 11542‑1 (PE‑UHMW designation)

Keywords: ISO 17855-1, polyethylene designation, PE moulding materials, MFR, density, PE grades, extrusion and moulding, polyethylene specification.
