EN 2716:2018 (CEN) defines an aerospace series test method to determine the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion (IGC) of wrought aluminium alloy products in the AL-P2XXX and AL-P7XXX series and aluminium-lithium alloys. The standard describes sample selection, chemical preparation, immersion testing, microscopic examination and acceptance criteria used to assess material integrity for aerospace applications. Sample preparation:
- Remove cladding for clad products by a suitable method.
- Degrease in acetone.
- Immerse for 1 minute at 95 °C ± 5 °C in a preparatory solution of nitric acid (70 %): 5 % vol, hydrofluoric acid (40 %): 0.5 % vol, balance demineralised water.
- Rinse in demineralised water, desmutt in 70 % nitric acid at ambient temperature, rinse and dry.
Corrosion test:
- Vertically immerse prepared samples in a freshly prepared test solution at 25 °C ± 5 °C for 6 hours.
- Test solution: 57 g NaCl (analytical grade), 10 ml hydrogen peroxide (30 %), make up to 1 000 ml with demineralised water.
- Use at least 10 ml of solution per cm² of specimen surface; electrically isolate multiple samples when immersed together.
Microscopic examination:
- From the area with the most severe surface attack, take a section at least 20 mm long perpendicular to working direction.
- Prepare and examine at 100× to 500× magnification.
- Etch the section (nitric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric acids in specified proportions) for up to 30 s, then re-examine.
Acceptance criteria: Results shall meet the requirements of the relevant technical specification, material standard, drawing, order or inspection schedule.
