Overview

EN 61834-7:2001 (CLC adoption of IEC 61834-7:2001) specifies the EDTV2 format as an extension to the SD mode of the helical-scan digital video cassette system using 6,35 mm magnetic tape for consumer use. It applies to 525-60, 625-50, 1125-60 and 1250-50 systems and defines the features required for recording and reproduction of EDTV2 signals on consumer DVCRs. The standard is optional (an extension to SD/SP mode) and relies on the core IEC 61834 family for general system and pack header definitions.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and system support: Extension to SD specification for EDTV2; compatible with the four tape/sync systems listed above.
  • Helical recording & track structure: Uses APT = 000b track configuration as defined in IEC 61834-1; program track data arrangement follows SD conventions.
  • Audio and video interfaces: Principal video interface is analogue (converted as described in clause 7.4.3). A bit-serial digital interface is acknowledged and its data structure is referenced (clause 11) pending preparation; audio interface follows IEC 61834-2.
  • Video signal processing: Addresses error-correction (BCH code), randomization patterns, video structure, DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) processing, quantization, VLC (Variable Length Coding), arrangement of compressed macroblocks and video segments, and VAUX (video auxiliary data).
  • Audio processing and subcode: Audio auxiliary data (AAUX) and subcode handling are defined consistent with the SD base format.
  • System data & cassette memory: Includes specifications for system data packs and MIC (memory in cassette).
  • Normative references: Relies on IEC 61834-1, -2, -4 and IEC 61883-1/-2 for general, SD specifics, pack header content and digital interface conventions.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of consumer DVCRs and recording heads implementing EDTV2-capable models.
  • Component suppliers (codec, tape transport, analog/digital interface vendors) designing compatible modules.
  • Test and conformance labs verifying EDTV2 recording/reproduction behavior against standardized pack, track and signal structures.
  • Broadcasters, content producers and archivists requiring documented interoperability for EDTV2 tape exchange and playback.
  • Standards bodies and product certification schemes referencing EN 61834-7 for consumer helical-scan equipment.

Related standards

  • IEC/EN 61834 series: Part 1 (General), Part 2 (SD format), Part 4 (Pack header table) - all essential when implementing EDTV2.
  • IEC 61883-1 / IEC 61883-2 for digital audio/video interface conventions.
  • BTA T-1004-1995: referenced for EDTV2 signal format description.

This standard is essential for anyone designing or verifying consumer helical-scan DVCRs that need to support EDTV2 recording and playback, ensuring interoperability and consistent video/audio processing across devices.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
