SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 197 Amendment A1 from ETSI. It updates the technical parameters for radio relay systems at 38 GHz that carry digital signals and analogue video signals, especially channel spacing, spectrum-measurement settings and performance masks.
Engineers, network planners, equipment manufacturers and test laboratories use this amendment when they need to apply the revised spacing and measurement rules to 38 GHz radio relay systems. In practice, it matters for frequency planning, transmitter verification and checking interference and bit-error performance.
What does SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 specify?
SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 specifies amendments to ETS 300 197 (1994), not a complete standalone rewrite. The amendment updates the 38 GHz transmission and multiplexing parameters for digital and analogue video radio relay systems.
The document is organized as a set of replacements to specific parts of the base standard:
- subclause 4.1.2
- table 6
- table 7
- figure 3, replaced by figures 3a and 3b
- figure 8
The foreword, transposition dates and document history are also included.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000?
The most important change is the new channel-spacing arrangement in subclause 4.1.2. For low-capacity systems with 2-state modulation, table 1a keeps 7 MHz spacing for 2 Mbit/s and 14 MHz for 8 Mbit/s. For more spectrally efficient digital systems, table 1b introduces a common 3,5 MHz raster and gives the spacing used for 2 x 2 Mbit/s, 8 Mbit/s, 34 Mbit/s and 140/155 Mbit/s. In practice, this is the part a planner uses to choose compatible channel spacing before assigning frequencies.
Digital channel spacing
The amendment adds 3,5 MHz channel spacing for 2 x 2 Mbit/s transmission and 7 MHz channel spacing for 8 Mbit/s transmission. It also keeps the wider spacings for higher bit rates. This matters because the chosen spacing affects spectrum occupancy and how many links can fit into a band.
Analogue video channel spacing
Table 2 gives channel spacing for analogue systems by video baseband. For basebands below 3,5 MHz, below 6 MHz, below 10 MHz and below 14 MHz, the required spacings are stated in the table. This is the practical planning rule for analogue video links at 38 GHz.
Spectrum-analyser settings
Table 6 replaces the measurement settings for spectrum analysis. It links bit rate and channel spacing to IF bandwidth, total sweep width, video bandwidth and recommended scan time. In practice, this tells a test lab how to set up the analyzer so the measured spectrum is comparable to the standard's limits.
Transmitter spectral power density
Figures 3a and 3b replace the former figure 3 with spectral power density masks. Figure 3a applies to minimum system rates of 2 Mbit/s or 8 Mbit/s with 7 MHz spacing, while figure 3b applies to 2 x 2 Mbit/s with 3,5 MHz spacing. These masks define the allowed transmitter spectrum around the nominal centre frequency, so they are used during design and conformance testing.
Adjacent-channel interference
Table 7 gives adjacent-channel interference levels for the different bit rates and separations of wanted and interfering signals. The note says administrations may vary the co-polar carrier-to-interference ratio, typically in the range from 0 to -3 dB. This is useful when a regulator or operator needs to assess how closely channels can be reused.
BER versus RSL
Figure 8 shows BER versus RSL for the relevant bit rates and channel spacings, with interference evaluation points marked. In practice, this helps engineers relate receiver performance to received signal level and error rate during system checks.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 define?
BER means bit error rate, the error-performance measure used in Figure 8 to relate link quality to received signal level.
RSL means received signal level, the power level at the receiver input used on the BER versus RSL plot.
C/I means carrier-to-interference ratio, the relationship used in Table 7 when comparing wanted and interfering signals.
Co-polar refers to interference between signals with the same polarization, which is the case the note in Table 7 discusses for adjacent-channel interference.
Cross-polar refers to interference between signals with opposite polarizations, also shown in Table 7.
IF bandwidth means intermediate-frequency bandwidth, one of the spectrum-analyzer settings in Table 6.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000?
This amendment is used by radio relay system designers, transmission planners, equipment suppliers, test houses and regulatory administrations. They use it for channel planning, spectrum-mask verification, analyzer setup, adjacent-channel interference checks and receiver performance assessment for 38 GHz links carrying digital signals or analogue video signals.
What changed in SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 from the previous edition?
SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000 is Amendment 1 to ETS 300 197 (1994). The amendment:
- adds 3,5 MHz channel spacing for 2 x 2 Mbit/s
- adds 7 MHz channel spacing for 8 Mbit/s
- revises table 6 spectrum-analyzer settings
- replaces figure 3 with figures 3a and 3b for spectral power density limits
- replaces table 7 adjacent-channel interference levels
- replaces figure 8 with updated BER versus RSL curves
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 197/A1 E1:2000?
The amendment works with ETS 300 197 (1994), which it modifies. The Slovenian standard page identifies this document as identical to ETS 300 197/A1 Edition 1.
