SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 is the Slovenian standard identical to ETS 300 407 Edition 1 from ETSI. It specifies minimum performance parameters for digital radio relay systems (DRRS) and wideband analogue video radio links operating around 55 GHz. Engineers, operators, buyers and test labs use it to check band use, interfaces, environmental classes, transmitter and receiver limits, and link-performance tests.

What does SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 specify?

SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 covers terrestrial fixed services radiocommunications equipment at frequencies around 55 GHz. Clause 1 divides the equipment into two groups - digital signals and analogue video signals - and the rest of the document sets the common radio, interface and performance parameters for those two cases.

The document is organized into:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Abbreviations
  • Clause 4 - General characteristics
  • Clause 5 - Parameters for digital systems
  • Clause 6 - Parameters for wideband analogue systems
  • Annex A - Additional information
AnnexWhat it covers
APerformance prediction and objectives, including rain attenuation and outage references

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003?

The standard sets the radio band, channel plan, installation conditions, interface types and performance checks that define how 55 GHz DRRS equipment is planned and tested. In practice, it tells you what frequencies to use, how to reference measurements, and which transmitter, receiver and link-quality limits apply.

Band, channel plan and installation conditions

Clause 4.1 places the band at 54.25 GHz to 57.2 GHz and uses a basic raster of 14 MHz. It also sets co-polar channel spacing, the transmit/receive center gap, and a minimum transmit/receive duplex separation of 500 MHz. For a reader, this means channel planning must follow the fixed raster and spacing rules rather than ad hoc frequency selection.

Clause 4.2 says compatibility should not depend on pairing a transmitter from one manufacturer with a receiver from another. Clause 4.3 links the equipment to ETS 300 019 environmental classes, while Clause 4.3.2 requires operation under ETS 300 385 EMC conditions. Clause 4.9 ties the equipment to the power-supply ranges in ETS 300 132-1 and ETS 300 132-2, with 48 V dc, 60 V dc and 230 V ac tolerances listed in Table 3 and the positive pole of dc systems intended to be earthed.

Clause 4.7 points to the antenna radiation pattern envelope in Figure 2 and says IEC type R620 should be used for antenna and feeder flanges when flanges are required. Clause 4.8 reminds designers to consider external-unit weight, wind loading and access to replaceable units. That matters because the standard is not only about radio performance - it also shapes the physical installation.

Digital DRRS requirements

Clause 5.1 covers bit rates from 2 Mbit/s to 155 Mbit/s, including n x 2 Mbit/s configurations, and Clause 5.2 lists point-to-point local and regional networks, mobile base station connections, and subscriber access links. Clause 5.3 defines baseband interfaces: the 2 Mbit/s to 140 Mbit/s rates use G.703, with optional service channels and wayside traffic, and the SDH interface follows the ITU-T SDH series named in the clause. In practice, this is the part that tells an implementer what transport interfaces the radio must accept.

Clause 5.4 limits transmitter output power to up to 0 dBW at point D', sets output power tolerance by environmental class, and requires compliance with the RF spectrum masks in Figures 3 to 6. It also sets the residual carrier test, spurious emissions from 1 GHz to 120 GHz, and an RF frequency tolerance not above ±100 ppm. Clause 5.5 gives the receiver input-level range, and Clause 5.6 uses BER-based performance tests, background BER, and interference sensitivity to prove the link behaves as expected.

The digital interference tests are practical planning tools. Clause 5.6.3 checks co-channel interference, adjacent-channel interference and continuous-wave spurious interference at point C, so users know how much interference margin the link should tolerate during design or acceptance testing. Clause 5.6.4 says distortion sensitivity is not likely to matter for short hops, so signatures are not required.

Wideband analogue system requirements

Clause 6 covers analogue video links with baseband widths up to 3.5 MHz, 10 MHz and 14 MHz, and it identifies uses such as broadcast TV, surveillance TV and radar remoting. Clause 6.3 defines video, audio, digital and IF interfaces, and it gives a sample performance set for PAL video plus audio in Table 7. For a reader, this shows the standard is aimed at practical analog transport, not just radio-frequency hardware.

Clause 6.4 limits transmitter power to up to 0 dBW at point C', sets output power tolerance by environmental class, and requires the radiated spectrum masks in Figures 8 and 9. It also controls frequency deviation for the main carrier and sub-carriers and sets spurious emissions and RF frequency tolerance. Clause 6.5 defines the receiver input range and noise figure, while Clause 6.6 defines the receiver threshold and the co-channel, adjacent-channel and continuous-wave interference checks used for planning.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 define?

  • BER - Bit Error Ratio, the ratio used to judge digital link quality at a stated receive level.
  • C/I - Carrier/Interference, the signal-to-interference measure used in the interference tests.
  • IF - Intermediate Frequency, the intermediate stage used where an IF interface applies.
  • RF - Radio Frequency, the radio band and measurement domain used throughout the standard.
  • RSL - Receiver Signal Level, the receive signal power level used in the BER curves and thresholds.
  • SDH - Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, the digital transport family used for the higher-rate baseband interface.
  • SRL - Spectrum Reference Level, the reference point used to set the spectral mask measurements.
  • TMN - Transmission Management Network, the management interface context referenced for network control.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 is used by microwave radio engineers, radio-relay equipment manufacturers, network operators, and installation contractors. It is also relevant to quality managers, procurement teams and test laboratories that need to confirm whether equipment meets the expected band plan, interfaces and performance limits.

In practice, users apply it when designing point-to-point links, checking environmental and EMC suitability, selecting power supplies, planning interference margins, and running acceptance tests. It is especially relevant for fixed terrestrial links used for local and regional networks, mobile base station backhaul, subscriber access, transportable and off-shore use, broadcast TV, surveillance TV and radar remoting.

What does the SIST ETS 300 407 E1:2003 document contain?

The document includes an RF block diagram with reference points used for measurements, plus an antenna gain envelope figure for off-axis performance. It also contains spectral mask figures for digital and analogue transmitters, a BER-versus-RSL curve, and tables for channel spacing, baseband interfaces, spectrum-analyser settings, frequency deviation and interference levels.

For digital systems, the tables and figures support transmitter testing, receiver testing and BER checks. For analogue systems, they support video, audio and IF interface assessment, spectral measurements and interference planning.

Annex A gives additional information on performance prediction and objectives. It points readers to ITU-R and CCIR guidance for rain attenuation, outage and propagation prediction, which is the practical basis for planning links around 55 GHz.

The equipment may comprise both radio relay units in weather protected locations, and outdoor units with
the Radio Frequency (RF) assemblies located close to the antenna in order to minimize feeder losses.
