Abstract

The present document defines the requirements for radio frequency usage for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) location tracking devices. These devices operate in the frequency range from 6 GHz to 9 GHz and use a fixed infrastructure. It covers Ultra Wide Band location tracking tags which are attached to people or objects and are tracked using a fixed infrastructure. Operation is mainly indoors. Outdoor usage is only allowed under an adequate national licensing scheme.

SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1, a Harmonized European Standard for Ultra WideBand (UWB) location tracking equipment. It specifies the radio-frequency requirements and test approach used to show compliance with Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive, mainly for manufacturers, test labs, and compliance teams. The equipment covered is UWB location tracking tags and fixed receiver infrastructure operating in the 6 GHz to 8.5 GHz range.

What does SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 specify?

SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 sets the spectrum-use requirements for UWB location tracking equipment and organizes them into requirements, tests, and a harmonized requirements table. It is part 2 of a multi-part deliverable, with Part 1 providing the technical characteristics and test methods.

The scope covers tags attached to people or objects and tracked by fixed receiver infrastructure. The document applies to indoor use and to portable or mobile outdoor applications; outdoor use is tied to an adequate national licensing scheme. Equipment is fitted with an integral or dedicated antenna.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008?

SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 focuses on emissions, receiver spurious radiation, and the way compliance is demonstrated. In practice, it tells a provider what to declare, what to measure, and which tests are part of the essential radio test suite.

Environmental profile and applicability

Clause 4.1 requires the provider to declare the operational environmental profile, and the equipment has to comply within those boundary limits. This means the claimed operating conditions matter before testing starts, because the results are only meaningful for the declared environment.

Transmitter limits

Clauses 4.2.1.1, 4.2.1.2, and 4.2.1.3 control the maximum mean equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) spectral density, the frequency of the highest maximum mean e.i.r.p. spectral density, and the maximum peak e.i.r.p. These requirements keep the transmitter energy inside the allowed spectrum envelope.

Clause 4.2.1.4 sets a minimum Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) for transmitters using impulsive UWB signals. For a designer, this matters because the pulse timing is part of the radio behavior that must remain within the approved limits.

Receiver limits and design provisions

Clause 4.2.2.1 limits receiver spurious radiations. Clause 4.3 adds design requirements taken from Annex C of EN 302 500-1, so compliance is not only about measured emissions but also about how the equipment is designed.

Testing and compliance evidence

Clause 5 links each requirement to a test procedure and says testing shall be carried out at representative points within the declared environmental profile. Clauses 5.2.1 and 5.2.2 define the essential transmitter and receiver test suites, and clause 5.3 uses the measurement-result interpretation from EN 302 500-1. Annex A then cross-references each requirement to its test status, including whether it is unconditional or conditional.

What terms does SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 define?

Ultra WideBand (UWB) is the radio technology used by the equipment covered by this standard.

Short Range Devices (SRD) are the class of devices to which the document belongs.

equivalent isotropically radiated power (e.i.r.p.) is the antenna-related power measure used for transmitter limits and testing.

Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) is the rate at which impulses repeat in impulsive UWB transmitters.

R&TTE Directive is the European directive whose Article 3.2 is addressed by this standard.

HS-RTT means Harmonized Standard Requirements and conformance Test specifications Table, the cross-reference table in Annex A.

Who uses SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008?

SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 is used by manufacturers of UWB location tracking tags and associated receiver systems, especially when the products use fixed infrastructure. It is also used by test laboratories that measure emissions and receiver spurious radiations, and by regulatory or quality teams that need a structured route to document conformity with Article 3.2.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008?

What does the SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.2.1:2008 document contain?

The document contains the scope, references, definitions, technical requirements, and compliance testing structure for UWB location tracking equipment. Clause 4 covers environmental profile, transmitter requirements, receiver requirements, and design requirements.

Clause 5 gives the environmental conditions for testing, the essential radio test suites, and the interpretation of measurement results. Annex A provides the HS-RTT table that links each requirement to its test specification and compliance status. Annexes B and C provide the official-language titles and bibliographic references.

Foreword This Harmonized European Standard (Telecommunications series) has been produced by ETSI Technical Committee Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM). The present document is part 2 of a multi-part deliverable covering Short Range Devices (SRD) using Ultra WideBand (UWB) technology; Location Tracking equipment operating in the frequency range from 6 GHz to 8,5 GHz, as identified below: Part 1: "Technical characteristics and test methods"; Part 2: "Harmonized EN covering essential requirements of article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive". The present document has been produced by ETSI in response to a mandate from the European Commission issued under Council Directive 98/34/EC [i.1] (as amended) laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of technical standards and regulations. The present document is intended to become a Harmonized Standard, the reference of which will be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities referencing the Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 1999 on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity ("the R&TTE Directive") [i.2]. Technical specifications relevant to Directive 1999/5/EC [i.2] are given in annex A.

1 Scope The present document specifies the requirements for ultra-wideband Location Tracking equipment operating in all or part of the frequency range from 6 GHz to 8,5 GHz. The present document applies for indoor as well as portable or mobile outdoor applications. It covers ultra-wideband location tracking tags which are attached to people or objects and are tracked using a fixed receiver infrastructure to only receive the UWB emission by the tags. Equipment covered by the present document is fitted with an integral or dedicated antenna. The present document is intended to cover the provisions of Article 3.2 of Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive) [i.2], which states that ". radio equipment shall be so constructed that it effectively uses the spectrum allocated to terrestrial/space radio communications and orbital resources so as to avoid harmful interference". 2 References References are either specific (identified by date of publication and/or edition number or version number) or non-specific. • For a specific reference, subsequent revisions do not apply. • Non-specific reference may be made only to a complete document or a part thereof and only in the following cases:
