Overview
EN 14187-1:2017 is the CEN test method for determining the rate of cure of cold applied joint sealants. The standard measures cure by tracking the build-up of the tensile modulus of test specimens during cure and comparing it to fully cured reference specimens. It is intended to support consistent quality control, product development and comparative performance assessment of sealing materials used in road and civil engineering applications.
Key Topics
- Principle: Rate of cure is expressed as the ratio (percentage) between the tensile modulus at a given time and the tensile modulus after complete cure.
- Apparatus and materials: Concrete supports (manufactured per EN 13880-12), anti-adherent substrate, spacers (12 mm × 12 mm × 12.5 mm), and a tensile test machine capable of extending specimens at (5.5 ± 0.5) mm/min.
- Specimen preparation:
- Assemble two concrete supports and two spacers on an anti-adherent substrate to form the moulded joint volume.
- Condition supports, spacers and sealant for 4 h at (23 ± 2) °C before casting.
- For multi-component sealants, mix components per manufacturer instructions; one-component products may be applied directly.
- Fill from the bottom to avoid air entrapment and trim flush with support faces. Six specimens are prepared for each test series.
- Conditioning and testing:
- Three specimens are conditioned as reference specimens according to EN ISO 8340 (method A or B).
- Three specimens are kept at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % r.h. during cure and removed at the required times to test the evolving modulus.
- Remove spacers and extend specimens to 100 % of original width at the specified extension rate while recording force/strain.
- Calculation:
- Rate of cure M (%) = (M1 / M2) × 100, where M1 is the mean tensile modulus of the test specimen at 100 % extension and M2 is the mean tensile modulus of the reference fully cured specimen.
Applications
- Quality control: Establish batch-to-batch cure behavior and ensure products meet curing performance targets.
- Product development: Compare formulations and accelerate development by quantifying cure kinetics under standard conditions.
- Specification and procurement: Provide objective cure-rate data for technical specifications and supplier evaluation.
Related Standards
- EN 14187 series (Parts 2–9) covering tack-free time, self-levelling, chemical resistance, hydrolysis, adhesion/cohesion after immersion, flame resistance, UV-ageing and function testing.
- EN 13880-12 - concrete supports for bond testing.
- EN ISO 6927 - sealant vocabulary.
- EN ISO 8340 - tensile properties at maintained extension.
This standard provides a repeatable, laboratory-based procedure to quantify cure progression of cold applied joint sealants using tensile-modulus metrics. Test reports should reference the standard, identify product and batch, report the rate of cure and note any deviations or test conditions.
