4 Principle
The correct functioning of the means of initiation ensures safe, reliable and complete detonation of
blasting explosives and boosters. The correct functioning of the means of initiation is verified through
observation of complete detonation upon initiation of test pieces. In case of blasting explosives, complete
detonation is given when the measured velocity of detonation of the test pieces is equal or higher than
the value specified for the explosive in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.8. In case of boosters,
complete detonation is either given the same way as for blasting explosives or by means of an indentation
shown on a witness plate. Testing is done at the minimum temperature of use specified for the explosive.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Means of initiation, being a detonator, a detonating cord with a detonator or a booster with a
detonator, in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.4 for explosives for blasting or with
EN 13631-1:2025, 6.1.5 for boosters.
5.2 Steel tube, of steel grade S 235 in accordance with EN 10025-2:2019, Clause 4 and Tables 1, 3 and
6, and with dimensions in accordance with EN 10216-1:2013, Table 7.
In case of bulk explosives, the resulting inner diameter of the steel tube shall be the nearest diameter
equal to or greater than the minimum diameter specified in accordance with EN 13631-1:2025, 4.1.9. The
wall thickness of the steel tube shall be the smallest preferred value as given for the outer d
