Overview
EN IEC 62386-150:2023 (Digital addressable lighting interface - Part 150) defines the minimum requirements for an auxiliary (AUX) power supply used in digital lighting systems. The AUX power supply provides low-voltage DC power (nominally 24 V) to field devices such as sensors, controllers or communication modules. This part of IEC 62386 is Edition 1 (2023) and is intended to be used alongside the general component and control-gear requirements in Parts 101 and 102.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on functional, electrical and safety characteristics for AUX power supplies. Major requirements include:
- Nominal output and tolerance: 24 V DC held within ±10% for loads between 0.1 W and 6 W (peak).
- Power capability: Average output power ~3 W and pulse/peak power up to 6 W.
- Maximum open-circuit voltage: Must not exceed 30 V under permitted conditions (including open circuit).
- Start-up behaviour: Reach 90% of nominal voltage within 600 ms after mains power is applied.
- Protection: Requirements for output overload and short-circuit protection to ensure reliable operation and device safety.
- Marking and safety rating: Interface marking and compliance with safety/rating conventions for integration in luminaires or control gear.
- Integration options: AUX supplies can be stand‑alone or integrated with control gear, control devices or bus power supplies.
The document also includes informational material (figures and a table of electrical characteristics) and normative references that make the part usable in a system context.
Practical applications
EN IEC 62386-150:2023 is used where a stable low-voltage DC source is required within a digital lighting ecosystem:
- Powering occupancy sensors, daylight/photo sensors and local controllers
- Supplying communication devices or other low-power field modules
- Enabling compact luminaire designs by removing the need for separate AC/DC supplies, surge suppression and EMI filters in each sensor/device
- Designing auxiliary supply modules integrated into control gear, bus units or separate AUX modules
Who should use this standard
- Lighting manufacturers and luminaire designers specifying AUX outputs
- Control-gear and control-device designers integrating auxiliary power
- System integrators and lighting specifiers creating digital lighting installations
- Test labs and compliance engineers validating AUX supply behaviour and safety

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of
