oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 is a SIST standard for determining platinum in homogeneous platinum alloys by inductively coupled argon plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) with an internal standard element. It specifies an analytical procedure for platinum alloys with nominal platinum content up to 990 ‰ by mass, including alloys according to ISO 9202. It is written for laboratories that need a repeatable assay method for jewellery and precious metals.

What does oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 specify?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 specifies the scope, the analytical principle, the working materials and the calculation route for platinum determination in platinum alloys. It is organized into Clauses 1 to 10, followed by two informative annexes.

The method applies to homogeneous material and prefers samples with platinum content between 50 ‰ and 990 ‰ by mass. Platinum above 990.0 ‰ by mass is handled by ISO 15093, while lower contents can also be analysed by referring to this method.

What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 requires a controlled ICP-OES procedure with internal standardization, bracketing calibration, and duplicate sample preparation. In practice, the method depends on clean reagents, matched matrices, stable instrument settings, and calculation from intensity ratios.

  • Principle, Clause 4 - At least two accurately weighed samples are dissolved in aqua regia, brought to exact mass, mixed with an internal standard, and measured by ICP-OES against calibration solutions. This means the analyst works from prepared solutions, not direct solid measurement, and must keep the calibration and sample treatment aligned.
  • Reagents, Clause 5 - Reagents must be of recognized analytical grade, water must be distilled or equivalent, and all reagents except platinum must be platinum free. This matters because trace contamination can bias a precious-metal assay.
  • Internal standard and matrix control, Clauses 5 and 8.1 - The internal standard solution uses elements such as Yttrium, Scandium, Indium, Germanium or Lutetium, and the chosen element must not be present in the alloy. This reduces drift and matrix effects, so the signal ratio remains meaningful.
  • Equipment, Clause 6 - The ICP-OES must measure platinum and internal standard lines simultaneously with at least 0.02 nm optical resolution, and the balance must read to 0.01 mg. Clean vessels and argon of purity at least 99.995 % are required. That level of control supports traceable weighing and stable plasma conditions.
  • Sampling and sample solutions, Clauses 7 and 8.3 - Sampling follows ISO 11596, and each sample is prepared as two test sample solutions. The document also calls for consistent acid concentration between calibration and sample solutions. That consistency is important because mismatched chemistry can change the measured signal.
  • Special alloy handling, Clause 8.3.1 - Alloys containing more than 5 % ruthenium, iridium or tungsten may need pressure dissolution or a preliminary alloying stage with platinum-free copper, and tungsten requires orthophosphoric acid. This is the part the laboratory uses when the alloy composition makes ordinary dissolution unreliable.
  • Measurement and quality checks, Clause 8.4 - A preliminary calibration uses three standards to check linearity, with a regression coefficient greater than 0.9999, and bracketing then runs low standard - sample - high standard in cycles. Each solution needs at least 60 s stabilization, at least 15 s integration, and at least three integrations, with RSD not larger than 0.3 %.
  • Calculation, repeatability and reporting, Clause 9 and 10 - Results are calculated from corrected intensity quotients and the actual platinum mass in the standards; other algorithms must be validated. Duplicate determinations must differ by less than 3 ‰ by mass, and the test report must identify the sample, sampling, method reference, result, deviations, unusual features, date, laboratory, manager and operator signatures.

What terms does oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 define?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 defines the key terms used in the procedure so that laboratories read the method in the same way.

  • calibration solution - A solution used to calibrate the instrument, prepared from a stock solution or from certified reference material with added acids, buffer, reference elements and salts as needed.
  • bracketing - A measurement approach where the sample signal is placed between two calibration solutions of neighboring concentrations in the working range.
  • laboratory sample - The sample intended for laboratory inspection or testing.
  • test portion - The portion taken from the laboratory sample for analysis after suitable pretreatment.
  • test sample solution - The solution prepared after extraction or digestion of the test sample.
  • internal standard - A compound added in fixed amount to correct for instrument drift and matrix interference.
  • linearity - A straight-line relation between mean measurement result and analyte concentration.
  • linear calibration curve - The expression of the relation between instrument indication and measured quantity value.

Who uses oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 is used by analytical laboratories, assay laboratories, and quality control teams working with jewellery and precious metals. It also supports manufacturers, refiners, and buyers who need a documented platinum content for platinum alloys.

In practice, users apply it for incoming inspection, process control, product release, and dispute testing. The test report format also makes it useful for certification and audit records.

What changed in oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 from the previous edition?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 11494:2014 and is technically revised. The stated changes include:

  • the definition of bracketing was removed from Clause 3;
  • the recommended lines were removed from Clause 4;
  • reagents and the internal standard requirements were updated;
  • the preparation of the internal standard solution changed;
  • the list of calibration standards, the linearity check, and the choice of low and high standards changed;
  • aliquot-based preparation for standard and sample solutions was removed;
  • the preparation of standard and sample solutions was changed;
  • acid quantities for pressure dissolution were added;
  • bracketing and recommended lines were added in 8.4;
  • the calculation formulae were adapted;
  • the emission line no longer has to be stated in the test report;
  • the document was editorially revised.

Which standards are used with oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 refers to several other standards that support sampling, terminology and alternative platinum analysis.

  • ISO 11596 - Used for sampling of precious metals and precious metal alloys.
  • ISO 15093 - Used for the difference method when platinum content is above 990 ‰ by mass.
  • ISO 19376-1 - Supplies vocabulary terms used in the document, including precious metals, units, internal standard and test portion.
  • EN ISO 1042 - Named for grade A one-mark volumetric flasks used in the equipment list.

What does the oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 document contain?

oSIST prEN ISO 11494:2026 contains the full analytical workflow from sample preparation to reporting. Clause 8 includes the preparation of internal standard solution, calibration solutions, sample solutions, and the measurement sequence.

Clause 9 provides the calculation route, including corrected intensity quotients and the repeatability check, while Table 1 lists recommended wavelengths for platinum and internal standard elements and notes likely spectral interferences. Annex A explains the ICP-OES instrument arrangement and viewing modes, and Annex B summarizes interlaboratory testing data used to confirm performance.

— ICP-OES method using an internal standard element
1 Scope
This document specifies an analytical method for the determination of platinum on a material considered
homogeneous. The platinum content of the samples lies preferably between 50 ‰ (parts per thousand by
mass) and 990 ‰ (parts per thousand by mass). Fineness above 990,0 ‰ (parts per thousand by mass) can
be determined using a spectroscopy method by difference ISO 15093.
NOTE Lower contents of platinum can be analysed referring to this method.

4 Principle
At least two accurately weighed samples are individually dissolved in aqua regia and made up to an exactly
weighed mass. These sample solutions are mixed with an exact amount of internal standard and made up to
the standard measuring volume.
Using ICP-OES, the platinum content of the sample solution is measured by comparison of the ratio intensities
of the spectral emission of platinum and appropriate internal standard line(s) with the ratio for solutions
containing known masses of platinum and internal standard using the bracketing method.
Minor modifications are required when the alloy contains ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, or tungsten.
