oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 is a SIST standard for determining palladium in jewellery and precious metals by ICP-OES using an internal standard element. It specifies an analytical procedure for homogeneous palladium alloys with a nominal content up to 990 ‰, including alloys according to ISO 9202, and it is written for laboratories that need to measure palladium content in a controlled way.

What does oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 specify?

oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 specifies a laboratory method for palladium determination in palladium alloys. The preferred sample range is 50 ‰ to 990 ‰, and lower contents can also be analysed by reference to the method. For contents above 990.0 ‰, the document points to ISO 15093.

The document is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Principle, Reagents, Apparatus, Sampling, Procedure, Calculation and expression of results, and Test report. It also includes two informative annexes that give technical background and interlaboratory testing information.

What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026?

Sample preparation and measurement

oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 requires at least two accurately weighed samples to be dissolved in aqua regia, made up to an exactly weighed mass, mixed with the internal standard, and brought to the measuring volume. In practice, this means the result is based on prepared solutions, not direct metal reading, so weighing and solution handling affect the result.

Clause 8 also requires the acid concentration of calibration solutions and sample solutions to be consistent. This matters because matrix differences can shift the ICP-OES signal and change the comparison between standards and samples.

Calibration and bracketing

The method uses ICP-OES comparison of palladium and internal standard emission intensity ratios. Clause 8.2 requires a preliminary linearity check with at least three calibration standards, and the regression coefficient for the linear calibration curve must be greater than 0.9999.

For routine measurement, the method uses bracketing with two calibration standards around the expected sample content. The sequence alternates low standard and high standard with the sample, and each solution needs stabilization, integration time, and repeated integrations. For the user, this means the instrument program and standard range must be set before testing starts.

Internal standard and special alloy cases

Clause 8.1 specifies an internal standard solution based on elements such as In, Lu, Ge, Sc or Y, with the concentration adjusted to instrument sensitivity. The internal standard is used to correct for instrument drift and matrix effects, so it helps keep the ratio measurement stable.

Clause 8.3.1 gives special preparation for alloys containing ruthenium, iridium or tungsten. In some of these cases, pressure dissolution or a preliminary alloying stage with palladium-free copper is needed, and tungsten requires orthophosphoric acid. This matters because some alloy matrices need extra preparation to dissolve properly and to avoid biased results.

Calculation, repeatability and reporting

Clause 9 calculates palladium content from corrected intensity ratios and the measured masses used in the standards and sample solution. The method requires the relative standard deviation of the measured quotients and of the final mass result to stay within the stated limit, and duplicate determinations must differ by less than 3 ‰ for palladium.

Clause 10 requires the test report to identify the sample, sampling procedure, method reference, palladium content as single and mean values, deviations from the method, unusual observations, test date, laboratory identification, and signatures. For buyers and quality managers, this is the part that shows what must be documented with the result.

What terms does oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 define?

  • Calibration solution - A solution used to calibrate the instrument from a stock solution or certified reference material, with acids, buffer, reference elements and salt added as needed.
  • Bracketing - A measurement approach where the sample signal is bracketed by two calibration standards of neighbouring concentrations.
  • Laboratory sample - The sample intended for laboratory inspection or testing.
  • Test portion - The portion taken from the laboratory sample after pretreatment, in the amount needed for analysis.
  • Test sample solution - The solution prepared after extraction or digestion of the test sample.
  • Internal standard - A compound added in a fixed amount to help correct for instrument drift and matrix interference.
  • Linearity - The straight-line relationship between the mean measurement result and analyte concentration.
  • Linear calibration curve - The relation between instrument indication and the corresponding measured quantity value.

Who uses oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026?

This standard is used by analytical laboratories working in jewellery and precious metals, especially those measuring palladium alloys. It is relevant to assay laboratories, quality control teams, producers, refiners, and buyers who need a documented palladium content for acceptance, processing, or product verification.

It is also useful for technicians who prepare samples, calibrate ICP-OES instruments, and report test results in a form that can be compared between laboratories.

What changed in oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 from the previous edition?

oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 11495:2014. The foreword states these main changes:

  • the definition of bracketing in Clause 3 was removed
  • the recommended lines in Clause 4 were removed
  • reagents and internal standard requirements were updated
  • preparation of the internal standard solution in 8.1 was changed
  • calibration standards, their linearity check, and the choice of low and high standards in 8.2 were changed
  • aliquot-based preparation in 8.2 and 8.3 was removed
  • preparation of standard and sample solutions was changed
  • bracketing and recommended lines were added in 8.4
  • formulas in 9.1 were adapted
  • the emission line was removed from the test report information
  • the document was editorially revised

Which standards are used with oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026?

  • ISO 11596 - gives the sampling procedure for precious metals and precious metal alloys.
  • ISO 15093 - is the method named for determining high-purity gold, platinum and palladium by difference when fineness is above 990.0 ‰.
  • ISO 19376-1 - supplies vocabulary used for terms such as laboratory sample, test portion and internal standard.
  • EN ISO 1042 - is cited for one-mark volumetric flasks used in the apparatus section.

What does the oSIST prEN ISO 11495:2026 document contain?

The document contains a full analytical workflow: principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, solution preparation, measurement, calculation, repeatability and reporting. It also gives the internal standard solution, calibration solution preparation, and sample solution preparation, including special handling for ruthenium, iridium and tungsten-containing alloys.

Table 1 lists recommended palladium and internal standard wavelengths for ICP-OES. Clause 9 gives the calculation steps and formulas for corrected intensity ratios and palladium content, and Clause 10 defines what must be recorded in the test report.

Annex A explains the ICP-OES instrument setup and operation in technical terms, including plasma viewing options. Annex B summarizes interlaboratory testing data used to support the method performance.

by difference ISO 15093.
NOTE Lower contents of palladium can be analysed referring to this method.

4 Principle
At least two accurately weighed samples are individually dissolved in aqua regia and made up to an exactly
weighed mass. These sample solutions are mixed with the internal standard and made up to the standard
measuring volume.
Using ICP-OES, the palladium content of the sample solution is measured by comparison of the ratio
intensities of the spectral emission of palladium and appropriate internal standard line(s) with the ratios for
solutions containing known masses of palladium and internal standard using the bracketing method.
Minor modifications are required when the alloy contains ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, or tungsten.
