Plastics - Epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP-PMCs) - Part 1: Designation system and basis for specifications (ISO 15252-1:1999)

1.1 This part of ISO 15252 establishes a data block system for the designation of epoxy powder moulding
compounds (EP-PMCs).
1.2 The various types of EP-PMC are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on
information about the filler/reinforcement type and content, the intended method of processing, any special
properties and those of the special properties used specifically for designation purposes (designatory properties).
1.3 This part of ISO 15252 is applicable to all EP-PMCs ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or
ground material.
1.4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation necessarily give the same
performance. This part of ISO 15252 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing
conditions which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. If
such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in
part 2 of this International Standard, if suitable.
1.5 Whenever general requirement data, as covered by part 3 of this International Standard, need to be
indicated, this is also done using this data block system.
1.6 To ensure that code-letters and code-numbers remain unambiguous, and to avoid conflicts within the
system, any new code-letters or code-numbers for use in data block 1, 2 or 3 shall be approved before use by the
secretariats of ISO/TC 61/SC 1, SC 12 and SC 13.

utilisation.

Overview

EN ISO 15252-1:1999 - Plastics: Epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP‑PMCs) - Part 1 defines a standardized designation system and basis for specifications for epoxy powder moulding compounds (EP‑PMCs). The standard establishes a compact, unambiguous data block format to describe the polymer identity, fillers/reinforcements, processing method, special properties and any additional purchaser‑supplier requirements. It applies to EP‑PMCs supplied as powders, granules or ground material and is intended for material identification and specification-not for delivering engineering or processing performance data.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Data block system: Designations use an identity block (ISO number) plus an individual‑item block subdivided into five data blocks:
    • Data block 1 - Marking: polymer symbol (EP) and designatory filler/reinforcement type, form and nominal content (code letters/numbers per Table 1).
    • Data block 2 - Method of processing: code letters for intended processing (e.g., M = injection, Q = compression, G = general purpose).
    • Data block 3 - Properties: code for special properties (electrical, mechanical, flame resistance, etc.) and two designatory properties - impact strength (ISO 179‑1) and temperature resistance (ISO 75‑2).
    • Data block 4 - Further information: references to an international, national or company standard.
    • Data block 5 - Optional: additional purchaser‑supplier requirements.
  • Notation rules: Use hyphen and commas to separate blocks; use “X” when a block is not applicable but followed by others. Mixtures are indicated with “+” inside parentheses (e.g., EP(GF20+MD20)).
  • Limitations: The standard explicitly states that identical designations do not guarantee identical performance; specific test data and processing conditions are outside Part 1 and should be determined using Part 2 test methods where applicable.
  • Governance: Any new code‑letters or numbers must be approved by the secretariats of ISO/TC 61 subcommittees to avoid ambiguity.

Applications and Who Uses It

  • Material manufacturers: to label and present EP‑PMC product lines consistently.
  • Design engineers and specifiers: to identify candidate materials and request specific test data or additional requirements.
  • Purchasing and quality departments: for unambiguous ordering, traceability and contractual specifications.
  • Standards committees and regulators: to align national or company specifications with the ISO designation system.

Practical applications include electrical components, thermoset mouldings and industrial parts where epoxy powder moulding compounds are used and a standardized material designation simplifies selection and procurement.

Related Standards

  • ISO 15252‑2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties (for performance testing)
  • ISO 15252‑3: Requirements for selected moulding compounds
  • ISO 75‑2 (temperature resistance), ISO 179‑1 (impact testing), ISO 1043‑1/2 (polymer and filler symbols), ISO 472 (vocabulary)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
