Overview

SIST EN IEC 61587-1:2022/oprA1:2025 is the latest amendment to the international standard governing mechanical structures for electrical and electronic equipment. Specifically, it focuses on tests related to the IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 series. This amendment emphasizes environmental requirements, test setups, and safety aspects to ensure robust mechanical design and reliable electrical safety.

Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and maintained by sub-committee IEC SC 48D, this standard plays a critical role in defining test methodologies for enclosures and frames used in electrical and electronic assemblies. It supports manufacturers, testers, and certification bodies by specifying the environmental conditions and safety protocols these mechanical structures must meet.

Key Topics

  • Environmental Requirements: Specifies the necessary conditions to simulate real-world environmental stresses such as temperature, humidity, and mechanical loads on electrical enclosures.
  • Test Setups: Details standardized test procedures including vertical load testing and stability assessments to verify the structural integrity of enclosures and racks.
  • Safety Aspects: Focuses on ensuring user protection through adequate electrical conductivity and earth bonding of equipment in accordance with IEC 61140, IEC 62368-1, and IEC 61439-5 standards.
  • Updated Normative References: Incorporates relevant standards such as IEC 62208 for empty enclosures and IEC 61140 for shock protection, ensuring comprehensive safety coverage.
  • Test Alternatives: Allows substitution of test methods, for example, using vertical load tests from IEC 62208 Ed.2 instead of previously mandated vertical structure tests-improving test flexibility and relevance.
  • Optional Stability Tests: Introduces threshold, blocking, and touch down tests to simulate adverse operating conditions, aiding in robust design validation.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 61587-1:2022/oprA1:2025 serves a vital role across industries relying on high-quality mechanical structures for electrical and electronic equipment, including:

  • Electrical Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies: Ensuring enclosures meet safety and durability requirements for industrial and public electric power distribution.
  • Data Center and Telecom Equipment: Validating racks and frames used for sensitive electronic devices operate safely and resist environmental challenges.
  • Audio/Video and ICT Equipment Enclosures: Applying safety standards for housings to prevent electric shock risks and mechanical failures.
  • Testing and Certification Bodies: Providing recognized methods to certify compliance with international safety and performance norms.
  • Manufacturing and Design Engineers: Guiding design decisions to enhance enclosure resilience and compliance with global safety requirements.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60917 Series – Standardized mechanical dimensions and requirements for electrical equipment racks and frames.
  • IEC 60297 Series – Frames, racks, and cabinets for electronic equipment – dimensional and mechanical specifications.
  • IEC 61140 – Protection against electric shock – General rules for installation and equipment.
  • IEC 62368-1 – Safety requirements for audio/video, information, and communication technology equipment.
  • IEC 61439-5 – Requirements for low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, especially those used in power distribution networks.
  • IEC 62208 – General requirements for empty enclosures intended for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear.

By adhering to SIST EN IEC 61587-1:2022/oprA1:2025, manufacturers and stakeholders ensure that mechanical structures for electrical and electronic equipment meet stringent environmental and safety performance criteria. This leads to enhanced equipment reliability, user protection, and international market acceptance through harmonized testing protocols.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publ
