Overview

SIST EN 30-1-1:2009/kFprA1:2010 is an important amendment (A1) to the European Standard EN 30-1-1:2008, focusing on the safety of domestic cooking appliances burning gas. Developed by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 49, this standard addresses safety requirements for gas cooking ranges, hotplates, ovens, and similar household appliances, ensuring consumer protection and compliance with EU safety directives.

This amendment introduces critical updates to the original standard, reflecting technological advancements and recent safety concerns. It revises safety measures for appliances with programmable burners, multi-sectional hotplate burners, and grills operated with the compartment door closed. SIST EN 30-1-1:2009/kFprA1:2010 supports manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and installers in maintaining safe domestic gas cooking environments across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Scope Modification
    Introduction of a new exclusion for appliances with programmable burners - uncovered burners must not be programmable and must be supervised during use.

  • Updated Normative References
    Reference to EN 437 updated to include the latest amendment (EN 437:2003+A1:2009), harmonizing test gases and pressure categories.

  • Multi-Sectional Hotplate Burner Controls
    Clarifications on design and operation of multi-ring burners with single sectional controls and bi-directional closing directions to prevent accidental ignition or gas flow.

  • Grill Burner Safety Enhancements
    New testing procedures for grills designed to operate with compartment doors open but capable of being closed accidentally to mitigate carbon monoxide (CO) risks.

  • Appliance Tilting and Fixing Devices
    Revised requirements for stabilizing devices on floor-standing and subclass appliances to prevent tipping hazards.

  • Instructions for Use and Maintenance
    Enhanced safety warnings emphasizing adequate kitchen ventilation to mitigate risks from heat, moisture, and combustion products, and cautioning against non-cooking uses such as room heating.

Applications

This standard amendment applies widely to manufacturers, suppliers, installers, and regulatory authorities involved with:

  • Domestic Gas Cooking Appliances
    Including gas cookers, ovens, hotplates, and grilling units for household kitchens.

  • Appliance Safety Compliance
    Ensuring that gas cooking devices meet up-to-date safety requirements, reducing risks of gas leaks, improper burner operation, or hazardous combustion by-products.

  • Product Design and Testing
    Guiding engineers to incorporate safety features for multi-ring burners and grill operation, and validating appliance performance with rigorous CO emission testing.

  • Consumer Protection
    Providing clear guidance for safe appliance use and maintenance, ensuring consumers are informed about ventilation and operational precautions.

  • Regulatory Alignment
    Enabling national standards bodies across Europe to harmonize legislation and enforcement of gas appliance safety consistent with EU mandates.

Related Standards

  • EN 437:2003+A1:2009 – Specifies test gases and appliance categories by pressure for domestic gas appliances, referenced and updated within this amendment.

  • EN 1106:2001 – Covers safety devices for gas burners, referenced for flame supervision device requirements and tap design.

  • EU Directives on Gas Appliances – The amendment supports compliance with essential EU safety directives governing household gas appliances.

By implementing SIST EN 30-1-1:2009/kFprA1:2010, stakeholders achieve higher safety levels in gas cooking appliance design, manufacture, installation, and use. The amendment addresses modern burner controls and operational hazards, with a focus on mitigating carbon monoxide risks and ensuring safe user interaction. This standard is an essential reference for maintaining safety and regulatory compliance in the European domestic gas cooking appliance market.

Introduction
This draft covers a proposal for an A1 to EN 30-1-1:2008 to take into account:
 the introduction of a new item j) under the exclusions in the Scope to consider that uncovered burners
shall not be programmable and need to be used attended;
 the updating of the reference to EN 437 replacing EN 437:2003 with EN 437:2003+A1:2009;
 the new concept for multi-sectional (sometimes called Multi-Ring) hotplate burner sectional controls (5.2.1
and 5.2.2.1);
 the operation of grills intended to be operated with compartment door open and tested with the
compartment door closed as it was considered to be necessary due to the possibility this situation may
happen in case of accidentally closing of the door (6.3.2 and 7.3.3.2.8). The proposal was put forward by
Ireland and United Kingdom NSBs based on some accidents happened in the said countries and it was
finalised based on comments from Germany and Italy NSBs and the discussion in CEN TC 49 WG1.
