Overview

EN 14516:2006/FprA1 is a CEN draft amendment to the European standard EN 14516:2006 - Baths for domestic purposes. Prepared by CEN/TC 163 (Sanitary appliances) under mandate M/110, this amendment aligns the standard with EC indications and the decisions on Annex ZA. It defines classification, essential characteristics and conformity/CE marking rules for domestic baths (personal hygiene use), with a focus on cleanability and durability.

Key topics

  • Scope and purpose
    • Applies to baths intended for domestic personal hygiene.
    • Supports CE marking and the Construction Products Directive (CPD, 89/106/EEC) via Annex ZA.
  • Product classification
    • Two classes: Class 1 (CL 1) - products meeting Clause 5 requirements; Class 2 (CL 2) - products meeting Clause 6 requirements.
  • Essential characteristics
    • Cleanability (appearance of surface, absence of inaccessible corners).
    • Durability (materials and surface attributes for anticipated working life).
    • Drainage requirements, referencing waste outlet compliance with EN 232.
  • Testing and compliance
    • Type testing tables for Class 1 and Class 2 list tests such as:
      • Appearance of surface
      • Drainage of water
      • Stability of bottom
      • Resistance to chemicals and staining
      • Resistance to temperature changes
    • Manufacturer must perform and pass relevant tests before delivery.
  • Marking, labelling and CE
    • Designation codes (e.g. EN 14516 – CL 1, optional second line for CA - DA).
    • Information to accompany CE marking includes manufacturer details, year, standard reference, product description and declared essential characteristics.
    • Annex ZA describes attestation of conformity (system 4) and declaration of conformity requirements.

Applications

Who uses this standard and why:

  • Manufacturers of domestic baths - to design, test and label products for EU market access.
  • Test laboratories - to perform the specified type and factory production control tests.
  • Architects, specifiers and distributors - to ensure selected baths meet cleanability/durability expectations and CE marking requirements.
  • Regulators and product compliance teams - to assess conformity with the CPD/CE marking regime.
  • Installers and facility managers - for guidance on installation, drainage and maintenance instructions manufacturers must supply.

Related standards and references

  • EN 14516:2006 (base standard)
  • EN 232 (waste outlet hole dimensions)
  • CEN Mandate M/110 (Sanitary appliances)
  • Annex ZA (Construction Products Directive conformity and CE marking guidance)

This amendment clarifies classification, testing and CE-marking obligations for baths for domestic purposes, helping manufacturers and stakeholders demonstrate fitness for intended use with emphasis on cleanability, durability, and regulatory compliance.
