Overview

EN IEC 60519-4:2022/prA1:2025 is an amendment (Amendment 1, Committee Draft for Vote) to Part 4 of the IEC/EN 60519 series: Safety in installations for electroheating and electromagnetic processing - Particular requirements for arc furnace installations. Published for CENELEC/IEC parallel voting in 2025, this amendment updates safety and electrical-design requirements specifically for arc furnace installations in industrial electroheating applications. It is of particular interest to manufacturers, specifiers and safety engineers working with electric arc furnaces and associated high-voltage equipment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • High-voltage primary-side design and enclosure
All high-voltage equipment on the arc-furnace transformer primary side must be designed, constructed and enclosed in accordance with IEC 61936-1:2021 or IEC 62271. The chosen standard must be identified on the rating plate.
  • Insulation coordination and clearances (voltage thresholds)
    • Arc furnaces with secondary voltages up to 1 000 V AC or up to 1 500 V DC: apply IEC 60664-1:2020.
    • Arc furnaces with secondary voltages between 1 000 V AC and 3 600 V AC or 1 500 V DC and 5 000 V DC: IEC 60664-1:2020 may be applied exceptionally, but only with manufacturer-specified special requirements.
  • Operational information and indicators
Control rooms must display visible status information for high-voltage switchgear and, where applicable, AC/DC disconnectors to support safe operation and maintenance.
  • Scope of electrical hazards
The amendment clarifies that electrical hazards considered are associated with currents/charges between 0 Hz and up to 100 Hz.

Applications and users

This amendment is directly applicable to:

  • Manufacturers of arc furnaces and furnace transformers
  • Plant electrical engineers and OEMs designing electroheating installations
  • Safety and compliance officers preparing documentation for CE/CENELEC conformance
  • Integrators specifying insulation coordination and switchgear for steelmaking, foundries and metallurgical plants

Practical uses include design verification, specifying switchgear/enclosures, rating-plate information, and control-room indicator requirements to improve operator safety and compliance.

Related standards

  • IEC 61936-1:2021 (Power installations exceeding 1 kV AC)
  • IEC 62271 (High-voltage switchgear and controlgear)
  • IEC 60664-1:2020 (Insulation coordination - Clearances and creepage distances)

Keywords: arc furnace safety, electroheating installations, EN IEC 60519-4 amendment, high voltage switchgear, insulation coordination, control-room indicators, industrial furnaces, IEC 60664-1.
