Overview

SIST-TP CEN/TR 17292:2019 is a technical report published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that provides precision data for key EN standards related to furniture surface durability tests. This document defines the repeatability and reproducibility standard deviations for test results obtained using the following standards:

  • EN 12720:2009+A1:2013 – Assessment of surface resistance to cold liquids
  • EN 12721:2009+A1:2013 – Assessment of surface resistance to wet heat
  • EN 12722:2009+A1:2013 – Assessment of surface resistance to dry heat
  • EN 15185:2011 – Assessment of surface resistance to abrasion
  • EN 15186:2012 – Assessment of surface resistance to scratching

The scope of CEN/TR 17292 encompasses rigid furniture surfaces irrespective of their materials, explicitly excluding leather and textile surfaces. The report is essential for determining the accuracy and reliability of test outcomes by specifying statistical measures that reflect precision.

Key Topics

  • Precision and Accuracy Metrics
The report focuses on two primary precision metrics:

    • Repeatability standard deviation (sr): Variation in test results when performed in the same laboratory by the same operator using the same equipment.
    • Reproducibility standard deviation (sR): Variation in test results when performed in different laboratories with different operators and equipment.
  • Statistical Basis
The precision data are derived from inter-laboratory studies following ISO 5725-1 and ISO 5725-2 standards, which establish methods for assessing the accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results.

  • Test Method Specific Precision Values
CEN/TR 17292 provides conservative estimates of sr and sR for each furniture surface test method, based on extensive multi-laboratory research:

    • Abrasion: Repeatability sd up to 50 cycles and reproducibility sd up to 60 cycles depending on abrasion intensity.
    • Scratching: Separate precision values for lineal and circular scratching, with lower standard deviations for circular scratching tests.
    • Cold Liquids: sr of 0.3 and sR of 0.5 indicating tight repeatability and reproducibility.
    • Dry Heat: sr of 0.3 and sR of 0.8 demonstrating moderate precision.
    • Wet Heat: sr of 0.2 and sR of 0.9 showing variability mainly in reproducibility conditions.
  • Practical Implications of Precision
These values help manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance specialists evaluate the reliability of their test results and discriminate between genuine material performance differences and variability due to testing conditions.

Applications

  • Furniture Product Testing
Enhances confidence in durability assessments of furniture surfaces by providing statistical benchmarks for interpreting test results related to abrasion, scratching, and resistance to heat and liquids.

  • Quality Control and Assurance
Enables suppliers and quality managers to set acceptance criteria based on scientifically derived repeatability and reproducibility limits, facilitating better compliance with product specifications.

  • Inter-laboratory Comparisons
Facilitates consistent evaluation when tests are conducted across different laboratories, supporting harmonization and mutual recognition of test outcomes across the European furniture industry.

  • Research and Development
Assists product developers in accurately assessing the reliability of new furniture surface treatments or materials by understanding measurement variability.

3.1
precision
closeness of agreement between independent test results obtained under stipulated conditions
Note 1 to entry: Precision depends only on the distribution of random errors and does not relate to the true
value or the specified value.
1)This document is impacted by the corrigendum ISO 5725-1:1994/COR 1:1998, Accuracy (trueness and precision)
of measurement methods and results — Part 1: General principles and definitions Technical corrigendum 1.
2)This document is impacted by the corrigendum ISO 5725-2:1994/COR 1:2002, Accuracy (trueness and precision)
of measurement methods and results — Part 2: Basic method for the determination of repeatability and
reproducibility of a standard measurement method Technical corrigendum 1.
Note 2 to entry: The measure of precision is usually expressed in terms of imprecision and computed as a
standard deviation of the test results. Less precision is reflected by a larger standard deviation.
Note 3 to entry: “Independent test results” means results obtained in a manner not influenced by any previous
result on the same or similar test object. Quantitative measures of precision depend critically on the stipulated
conditions. Repeatability and reproducibility conditions are particular sets of extreme conditions.
3.2
accuracy
closeness of agreement between a test result and the accepted reference value
Note 1 to entry: The term accuracy, when applied to a set of test results, involves a combination of random
components and a common systematic error or bias component.
