Overview

EN 2950:2008 - published by CEN - is an aerospace test method that defines the conditions for macrographic and micrographic examination of wrought heat‑resisting alloy semi‑finished products and parts. The standard provides procedural guidance, typical etching reagents and magnifications, and a normative atlas of common structures and defects (Annex A: macrographic references; Annex B: micrographic references). It is to be applied together with the relevant material standards that set acceptance criteria. EN 2950:2008 does not apply to cast or powder‑metallurgy products.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Wrought heat‑resisting alloys: semi‑finished products and finished parts.
    • Excludes cast and powder metallurgy products.
    • Must be used in conjunction with material standards specifying acceptance criteria.
  • Macrographic examination
    • Surface examination in the delivery heat‑treatment condition (unless agreed otherwise).
    • Surface preparation must avoid cold work or contamination.
    • Macroetching reagents and conditions are listed (examples: HCl, FeCl3, H2SO4 electrolytic/chemical etches).
    • Minimum illumination: 250 lux; magnification normally none, up to ×12 if required.
  • Cut‑up (section) examination
    • Plane sections taken per specification or order; cutting must not damage structure.
    • Prefer electrochemical etching when possible; typical etchants provided.
  • Micrographic examination
    • Used to investigate anomalies seen macroscopically or when required by material standard.
    • Surfaces polished to mirror finish free of cold work.
    • Typical microetchants listed (examples: Nital, Murakami’s, Glyceregia, HF/glycerol).
    • Optical microscopy minimum ×50; use same magnification as reference photomicrographs where possible.
  • Reporting
    • Results recorded per EN 2078: include photo identification, location, orientation, etch method and magnification.

Practical applications and who uses it

  • Primary users
    • Aerospace manufacturers, metallurgists, quality inspectors, NDT technicians, procurement and inspection engineers.
  • Typical uses
    • Incoming inspection of wrought heat‑resisting alloy bars, forgings, sheets and parts.
    • Root‑cause analysis for structural anomalies (freckles, white spots, inclusions, recrystallization, grain flow, delta/sigma/Laves phases, incipient melting, cracks).
    • Acceptance/rejection evidence when linked to material standard acceptance criteria.
  • Value
    • Standardizes visual and microscopic examination methods and provides visual references (atlas) for consistent defect identification and communication.
