Overview
EN 6041:2018 - Aerospace series: Analysis of non‑metallic materials (uncured) by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) - is a CEN standard that defines a laboratory test method to determine the curing‑characteristic and glass transition temperature (Tg) of uncured non‑metallic aerospace materials (for example, prepregs, neat resin systems and adhesives) using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The standard describes apparatus, specimen preparation, conditioning, test procedure, calibration and result reporting. It does not cover health and safety requirements.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Measurement of curing behaviour and Tg for aerospace non‑metallic materials to support process development and quality assessment.
- Apparatus & calibration:
- Use of a DSC capable of the specified test limits; calibration with pure indium to maintain temperature accuracy to ±0.5 °C and calorimetric precision within 1 %.
- Recommended purge gas: dry nitrogen (≥99.99 %), typical flow 20–30 ml/min.
- Balance accuracy: 0.01 mg.
- Specimen requirements:
- Sample mass equivalent to ~7–10 mg neat resin (e.g., ~20 mg prepreg); mass measured to 0.01 mg.
- Correction of reaction enthalpy (ΔH) to 100 % resin content when required.
- Test parameters:
- Standard heating rate: 10 °C/min (additional rates 5 °C/min and 20 °C/min for qualification).
- Test start: ~40 °C below expected Tg; test end: after region of interest.
- Pans: non‑hermetic crimped lids to avoid pressure build‑up.
- Conditioning & environment:
- Standard atmosphere: (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH (EN 2743 B conditions).
- Test to be performed within 6 hours after conditioning unless specified otherwise.
- Results & reporting:
- Determine Tg (onset/end/derivative methods) and cure exotherm parameters (onset, peak, ΔH).
- Quantitative repeatability targets: peaks within ±2 °C, ΔH within ±5 % of mean.
- Test report must include material ID, specimen prep, mass/resin content, test parameters and individual results.
Applications
EN 6041:2018 is used by:
- Materials and process engineers to develop and derive optimum cure cycles (in conjunction with other tests).
- Quality control and testing laboratories for release testing, batch verification and condition assessment of resins and prepregs.
- R&D teams studying ageing behaviour and storage condition effects on uncured resin systems.
