Surface active agents - Foaming power and antifoaming power - Turbine stirring method

This European Standard specifies a method for measuring the foaming power of a surface active agent and the antifoaming power of a defoamer with regard to a foaming solution.
The method is applicable to all surface active agents and particularly to low foaming products and antifoaming surface active agents.
However, measurement of the foaming power of solutions of readily hydrolyzable agents does not give valid results, as the hydrolysis products gather in the films of liquid and affect the persistence of the foam.

Overview

EN 13996:2002 (CEN) specifies a laboratory method - the turbine stirring method - for measuring the foaming power of surface active agents and the antifoaming power (defoaming efficiency) of defoamers with respect to a defined foaming solution. The standard is applicable to all surface active agents, with particular emphasis on low-foaming products and antifoaming surface active agents. Note: results for readily hydrolyzable agents are not valid because hydrolysis products alter foam persistence.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: Foam is produced by high-speed stirring of a test solution; foam volume and stability are followed for 15 minutes.
  • Test solutions:
    • Foaming test uses the product at working concentration.
    • Antifoaming test uses a 1 g/l reference foaming solution (nonylphenol 10 EO or saponin) with added defoamer concentrations.
  • Critical test parameters:
    • Stirring speed: 2 000 min⁻¹ (high-speed stirrer).
    • Stirring duration: 5 minutes (±10 s).
    • Test volume: 900 g in a 2 L stainless steel beaker.
    • Test temperature: (20 ± 1) °C; use water grade per EN ISO 3696 or water of known hardness (EN 12829).
    • Foam volume measured at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 15 minutes.
  • Apparatus & cleanliness: turbine/centripetal blade stirrer, baffle, graduated cylinder; rigorous cleaning of glassware is required to avoid contamination.
  • Calculations:
    • Plot foam volume vs time.
    • Foaming power can be quantified as the area between the curve and the time axis (1–15 min) via the trapezium method.
    • Antifoaming efficiency E = 100·(So − Sc)/So, where So is the surface area for reference foam and Sc for the defoamer-containing solution.
  • Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility limits determined from ring tests (details provided in Annex A).

Applications and users

This standard is practical for:

  • Quality control and batch release testing of surfactants, detergent ingredients, and defoamers.
  • R&D and formulation development to compare foaming and antifoaming performance.
  • Regulatory or specification setting where standardized foaming metrics are required. Typical users: chemical manufacturers, detergent formulators, analytical laboratories, and technical service teams in cleaning and industrial process sectors.
