Overview

EN 50470-1:2006/A1:2018 is the CENELEC amendment for electricity metering equipment (a.c.) - Part 1: General requirements, tests and test conditions covering metering equipment with accuracy class indexes A, B and C. Amendment A1 (approved 2018) updates normative references, aligns safety-related requirements with EN 62052-31:2016, and clarifies relationships with EU directives (MID 2014/32/EU and EMC 2014/30/EU). The document has been maintained in CLC legacy records and converted by DCLab NISOSTS (2021).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: General metrological requirements, type testing and test conditions for AC electricity meters (classes A, B, C). Safety requirements are now covered by EN 62052-31:2016.
  • Normative references: Adds EN 62052-31:2016 (product safety), EN 55032 (radio interference/EMC emissions) and EN 62058-11 (acceptance inspection methods). Several older standards were removed or updated.
  • Terms & definitions: Many definitions (e.g., indoor/outdoor meter, auxiliary circuit, terminal cover, accessible part) now reference EN 62052-31:2016.
  • Mechanical and climatic tests: Mechanical protection, ingress protection, resistance to heat/fire, and mechanical stress tests are referenced to EN 62052-31. Specific items like the spring hammer test are executed as part of safety testing in EN 62052-31.
  • Electrical requirements and tests: Heating, insulation, and other electrical tests are aligned with EN 62052-31 clauses. Radio interference suppression testing is to be performed per EN 55032 and results judged against EN 55032 limits.
  • Conformity & regulatory links: Informative Annexes ZZA and ZZB show how the standard supports essential requirements of Directive 2014/32/EU (MID) and Directive 2014/30/EU (EMC); presumption of conformity depends on citation in the EU Official Journal.

Practical applications

  • Use by electricity meter manufacturers to design and document compliance for class A/B/C AC meters.
  • Use by testing and calibration laboratories for defining test sequences and acceptance inspections.
  • Reference for conformity assessment bodies, utilities, and regulators when assessing metrological performance and EMC/ safety interfaces.
  • Useful to product safety and EMC engineers who must coordinate metrology requirements with EN 62052-31 safety tests and EN 55032 EMC testing.

Related standards

  • EN 62052-31:2016 - Electricity metering equipment (AC): product safety requirements and tests (safety now referenced throughout EN 50470-1).
  • EN 55032 - Electromagnetic compatibility: radio disturbance/EMC emission requirements.
  • EN 62058-11 - Acceptance inspection methods for electricity metering equipment.

Keywords: EN 50470-1, electricity metering, metering equipment class A B C, EN 62052-31, EMC, MID, metrology tests, electricity meter standards.
