oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 is the Slovenian draft adoption of ISO/DIS 12625-8:2026 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It specifies a basket-immersion test method for measuring water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity of tissue paper and tissue products. People use it when they need comparable absorbency results for product comparison, quality control, and trade.
What does oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 specifies how to measure water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity with a basket-immersion test. The document covers the full laboratory workflow, from sampling and conditioning through manual and automated testing, to calculation and reporting.
The document is organized into:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Principle
- Reagent
- Preparation and conditioning of the test pieces
- Manual test method
- Automated test method
- Calculation and expression of results
- Test report
- Annex A with precision data
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Precision from an interlaboratory round robin, including repeatability and reproducibility data for both manual and automated methods |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026?
The core requirement in oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 is to place a prepared tissue test piece in a cylindrical basket, immerse it in water under its own weight, measure the time to complete wetting, then determine how much water the test piece retains after the defined immersion and draining times. In practice, this gives two comparable results: how fast the product wets and how much water it absorbs.
Sampling, conditioning and test pieces
Clause 6 requires sampling according to ISO 186 when evaluating a lot, and conditioning according to ISO 187. Finished roll products must have the first six and last six layers removed before test pieces are taken, because those layers may be affected by adhesive or damage. Five test pieces are prepared, each 76 mm wide and about 5.0 g, unless another size is agreed and reported.
Reagent control
Clause 5 requires deionized water with low conductivity in accordance with ISO 14487. The water temperature should stay at the same temperature used for conditioning and testing, the water is changed after each series of tests, and any temperature other than 23 °C ± 1 °C must be reported. In practice, this controls one of the biggest variables in absorbency testing: the test water itself.
Manual test method
Clause 7 defines the manual apparatus and sequence. The setup includes a water container, timer, balance, cylindrical basket, and drainage support at a 30° angle. The basket is released from a set distance above the water surface, complete wetting is observed, the sample remains submerged for 30 s, then drains for 60 s before weighing.
Automated test method
Clause 8 allows automated equipment if it reproduces the manual procedure and result quality. The automated system must weigh and record automatically, keep the basket at the correct distance from the water surface, let the basket fall freely, start timing within 1 s after complete wetting, raise the basket at a constant rate, and provide a manual override if the timer fails. This is important when a laboratory wants higher throughput but still needs results comparable with the manual method.
Calculation and reporting
Clause 9 requires the mean water-absorption time and standard deviation from five replicates, or four if one piece does not sink within 60 s. Water-absorption capacity, Wa, is reported as grams of water per gram of test piece. Clause 10 lists the report items, including the method used, conditioning atmosphere, water temperature if different, sample identification, and any deviation from the document.
What terms does oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 define?
- Absorption time - the time required for complete wetting of a sample.
- Water-absorption capacity - the mass of water absorbed per unit mass of the test piece under specified conditions.
- Test piece - the prepared sample portion used for the measurement.
- Cylindrical basket - the wire basket that holds the test piece during immersion and drainage.
- Manual test method - the operator-run procedure described in Clause 7.
- Automated test method - the instrumented procedure described in Clause 8.
- Wa - the symbol used for water-absorption capacity in the calculation.
Who uses oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026?
oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 is used by test laboratories, tissue paper manufacturers, quality managers, and procurement teams that compare absorbency performance. It is also relevant for product development and incoming or outgoing quality checks, where consistent test conditions matter more than subjective judgment. The document is useful in European and international trade because it gives a common way to compare tissue products.
What changed in oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 from the previous edition?
This third edition cancels and replaces ISO 12625-8:2010, and it has been technically revised. The stated main changes are:
- addition of automated testing method options alongside the manual method
- rearrangement of different parts in 7.1
- addition of instruments in 7.2 and Annex A
- addition of 8.2 and 8.2.5
- editorial revision of the text
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026?
- ISO 186 - used for sampling when evaluating a lot.
- ISO 187 - used for conditioning the test pieces and controlling the conditioning atmosphere.
- ISO 15755 - used for detecting impurities and contraries in tissue paper and tissue products.
- ISO 287 - used when moisture content of the material must be determined.
- ISO 14487 - provides the water quality reference for the deionized water used in the test.
What does the oSIST prEN ISO 12625-8:2026 document contain?
The document contains the test principle, reagent requirements, specimen preparation rules, and two complete testing routes: manual and automated. It also includes figures for the basket and drainage arrangement, plus a calculation formula for water-absorption capacity. Annex A provides precision data from a round-robin study, with tables for repeatability and reproducibility for both water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity.

Introduction
This part of ISO 12625 describes a principle for the determination of water-absorption properties of tissue
paper and tissue products, a principle in which sheets of the sample are inserted in a cylindrical basket,
which is immersed in water. The results are expressed as
— water-absorption time, and
— water-absorption capacity.
In European and international trade, both water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity represent
important parameters in the field of comparison of tissue products.

4 Principle
A test piece of the tissue paper or a tissue product is placed in a cylindrical basket and allowed to immerse
in water under its own weight.
The time required for complete wetting of the test piece is measured, the mass of water absorbed then being
determined after a stated immersion time followed by a given draining time, under specified conditions.

5.1 Deionized water, with a conductivity ≤0,25 mS/m at 25 °C, in accordance with ISO 14487. The water
temperature should be maintained during the test at the temperature used for conditioning and testing. To
avoid interference due to contamination of the water from previous test pieces, change the water after each
series of tests. If temperature is different from 23 °C (+/- 1 °C), then water temperature shall be included in
the test report.
6 Preparation and conditioning of the test pieces
6.1 Sampling
If the tests are being made to evaluate a lot, select the sample in accordance with ISO 186. When sampling
finished roll products, eliminate at least the first six layers and the last six layers because of the possible
presence of adhesive or mechanical damage.
If the tests are made on another type of sample, make sure that the test pieces taken are representative of
the sample received.
6.2 Conditioning
Condition the test pieces in accordance with ISO 187, prepare and test the pieces under the same condition.
6.3 Preparation of test pieces
From the sample, prepare five test pieces by cutting test pieces of (76 ± 1) mm w
