SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006
(Main)Environmental Engineering (EE); European telecommunication standard for equipment practice; Part 3: Engineering requirements for miscellaneous racks and cabinets
- Abstract
The present document details requirements for miscellaneous racks and cabinets supplied unequipped. The miscellaneous racks/cabinets shall be used for housing telecommunication equipment forming part of a public telecommunication network installed either on the public telecommunication operators' sites or in the premises of operator's customers. The miscellaneous racks/cabinets shall be able to accommodate various equipments, e.g. subracks (see EN 300 119-4 [3]) and shall have provision for doors or covers. EN 300 119-1 [1] defines the meaning of rack or cabinet in the context of the present document.

SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1, published by SIST. It specifies engineering requirements for unequipped miscellaneous racks and cabinets used to house telecommunication equipment that forms part of a public telecommunication network. In practice, it helps designers, suppliers, installers and site planners make sure the rack or cabinet fits the equipment, the space, the cabling and the loading conditions.
What does SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 specify?
SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 covers miscellaneous racks and cabinets supplied unequipped, for use at public telecommunication operators’ sites or at customers’ premises. The focus is the mechanical practice around the enclosure itself: dimensions, access, line-up, floor loading, structural load, cable access and transport size.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, references, dimensions, accessibility and line-up, floor loading, structural load, external cable access and packaged dimensions, plus one informative annex with figures.
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - References
- Clause 3 - Dimensions for miscellaneous racks/cabinets
- Clause 4 - Accessibility and line-up
- Clause 5 - Floor loading
- Clause 6 - Structural load on a miscellaneous rack/cabinet
- Clause 7 - External cable access
- Clause 8 - Dimensions of packaged miscellaneous rack/cabinet
- Annex A - Illustrative figures
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006?
SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 sets the physical envelope and loading limits that make different racks and cabinets compatible in a telecom installation. The main idea is that the rack must accept equipment, support its weight, and still allow installation, maintenance and cabling.
Dimensions and mechanical interface
Clause 3 fixes the main outside dimensions for the standard versions: height, width and depth. The document also uses coordination dimensions and a 25 mm mounting pitch so that equipment and subracks can be planned against a common mechanical grid. In practice, this is what keeps different suppliers’ products compatible.
Access and lineup
Clause 3 and Clause 4 require space for doors or covers and for overhead attachment, and they require height-adjustable devices to compensate for floor unevenness. Open doors or covers must not block essential maintenance, and 300 mm deep units are intended for front access only. For row planning, the front line must stay aligned, including back-to-back arrangements.
Floor loading and structural load
Clause 5 limits how much weight the rack/cabinet and its cabling place on the floor. It distinguishes the load from the fully equipped rack, the cable support structure and cabling, and the point load at the base. Clause 6 then requires the structure to carry the superstructure load and extra installation load, so the frame remains stable during fitting and use.
Cable routing and transport
Clause 7 requires cable access at both the top and the bottom, supports direct rack-to-rack cabling within rows, and places external cables at the sides of the rack/cabinet. Clause 8 limits the packaged size for transport, which matters when the unit has to pass through normal lifts, hallways and doors.
What terms does SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 define?
- Coordination dimension - a reference size used to coordinate mechanical interfaces; it guides compatibility rather than exact manufacturing tolerances.
- Aperture dimension - a special coordination dimension for usable space between features; the actual opening can only be larger.
- Actual dimension - the real manufactured size of the part, used when checking whether the product fits the coordinated space.
- Mounting pitch - the 25 mm spacing used for mounting positions, which helps align subracks and fastening points.
- Subracks - equipment units that the miscellaneous rack/cabinet must be able to accommodate.
- Miscellaneous racks/cabinets - unequipped enclosures intended to house telecommunication equipment in public network practice.
Who uses SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006?
SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 is used by telecom equipment suppliers, rack and cabinet designers, operators, installers and site planners. Quality and procurement teams also use it when they need to check whether a rack or cabinet matches the required dimensions, load limits, cable routing and transport constraints.
What changed in SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 corresponds to ETSI EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1 (2004-09). The history also records an original 1994 edition as ETS 300 119-3 and a 2004 one-step approval milestone before publication.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006?
- EN 300 119-1 - defines the terminology and the meaning of rack or cabinet in this family.
- EN 300 119-2 - gives the engineering requirements for racks and cabinets.
- EN 300 119-4 - covers subracks in miscellaneous racks and cabinets.
- EN 300 119-5 - covers preferred thermal management solutions for indoor restricted-access installations.
- IEC 60917-2-1 - provides tolerances for the coordinated dimensions W3 and S.
What does the SIST EN 300 119-3 V2.1.1:2006 document contain?
The document contains the clause structure for dimensions, access, loading and cabling, plus Table 1 with the coordinated and aperture dimensions for the 600 x 300 and 600 x 600 versions. It also includes informative Annex A with figures that illustrate floor arrangement and the rack/cabinet geometry. The notes explain how to read coordination dimensions, aperture dimensions and actual dimensions, and how they relate to subrack installation. In practice, the content supports design review, installation planning and mechanical conformity checks.
