General Information
Overview
EN 14972-10:2022 is a CEN standard that defines a laboratory test protocol for atrium protection using sidewall nozzles on open water mist systems. It covers performance evaluation of fixed water mist systems intended for interior atriums with low or medium fire load, where fire loads or obstructions do not exceed 1.5 m in height. The standard is part of the EN 14972 series for water mist systems and references EN 14972‑1 (design/installation/maintenance) and ISO 5660‑1 (cone calorimeter reaction‑to‑fire testing).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Wall‑mounted open nozzle systems only; intended for atriums (open spaces with ceilings higher than one story) with limited vertical fire load.
- Test fuel package: Defined arrangement including combustible wall paneling and a three‑sofa assembly on steel frames. Mattresses have specified dimensions and foam properties and must be conditioned prior to tests.
- Fire test set‑ups: Three standard arrangements are specified (fuel package against the atrium wall; at half coverage spacing; at full system coverage distance) to evaluate coverage and performance.
- Instrumentation & measurements: Requirements for temperature, pressure, water flow rate and timing are specified. Water flow is measured between supply and system inlet (or derived from K‑factor for single fluid systems). Measurement tolerances are ±5 % unless stated otherwise.
- Operational rules: Systems are manually activated for testing; water flow is shut off 15 minutes after activation and any remaining fire is manually extinguished. Up to five tested nozzles are retained for verification.
- Performance evaluation: Criteria include temperature limits, fire damage assessment and other pass/fail indicators defined in the standard.
Practical applications
- Validation and certification of water mist sidewall nozzle systems for atriums.
- Design verification by fire protection engineers to ensure system layout, nozzle spacing and operating pressures meet proven performance.
- Type and acceptance testing by test laboratories and certification bodies.
- Compliance evidence for building owners, architects and regulators when specifying water mist for atrium fire protection.
Who should use this standard
- Fire protection system designers and installers
- Testing and certification laboratories
- Manufacturers of open nozzle water mist systems
- Building safety managers, consultants and authorities having jurisdiction

The SIST EN 14972-10:2022 standard provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating the fire performance of water mist systems, specifically tailored for the protection of interior atriums. Its scope is well-defined, addressing scenarios where the fire load is categorized as low or medium, and clearly stipulating that the fire load or obstructions must not exceed a height of 1.5 meters. This specificity is crucial, as it ensures that the test protocol remains relevant to practical applications in modern architectural designs, particularly where atriums are frequently included as critical communal spaces. One of the key strengths of this standard is its focus on sidewall nozzles for open nozzle systems. By emphasizing this component, the standard offers valuable guidelines that contribute to the effective control of fire scenarios in atrium environments. The methodology outlined in this document not only standardizes testing protocols but also enhances the reliability and consistency of fire protection measures across installations. This standardization is vital for stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and facility managers, as it provides a benchmark for fire safety that can be uniformly applied. Moreover, the standard’s relevance is underscored by an increasing trend towards incorporating water mist systems in fire protection strategies, especially in large, open spaces such as atriums. As urban architecture evolves, it is essential to have a standard that adapts to contemporary challenges while ensuring the safety of occupants. The SIST EN 14972-10:2022 addresses this need effectively, offering insights into the operational effectiveness of water mist systems in mitigating fire risks within these unique environments. In summary, the SIST EN 14972-10:2022 standard stands out for its clear focus on atrium fire protection through water mist technology, its precise parameters for testing, and its adaptability to current architectural practices. This makes it an indispensable resource for professionals in fire safety engineering and architectural design, facilitating improved safety measures in public and commercial buildings.
