Overview
EN 61770:2009/prAC:2025 (CLC) is a draft amendment to the European standard EN 61770:2009 that specifies requirements for electric appliances connected to the water mains to prevent the backflow of non‑potable water into the public supply and to reduce the risk of hose‑set failure. The document covers household and similar appliances and associated hose sets used on water mains supplying water at pressures up to 1 MPa. This prAC (2025) was prepared by CLC/TC 61 in collaboration with CEN/TC 164 and is currently submitted for enquiry within CENELEC.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of protection
- Prevention of backsiphonage and backflow from appliances into the water mains.
- Requirements apply to household and similar electrical appliances and connecting hose‑sets (≤ 1 MPa).
- Backflow prevention devices
- Instruction requirements: manuals must give guidance on installation and the type of backflow prevention device to use.
- Note: Certain clause requirements (4.1 and 4.2) do not apply to the backflow prevention device Category 2 shown in Figure Z22 (as referenced in the amendment).
- Air gaps
- Air gap AD calculations must use the upstream feed orifice D (n.3 of Figure Z5).
- If multiple upstream feed orifices exist, each is evaluated as a separate AD air gap.
- Pipe interrupters
- No specific orientation is required for pipe interrupters when applying the standard.
- Clarification: a water diverter valve is not considered a closing element.
- Hose‑set requirements
- Hose sets intended for connecting appliances are covered to reduce failure and consequent contamination risk; intended operating pressure up to 1 MPa.
Applications and users
This standard is practical for:
- Appliance manufacturers (washers, dishwashers, water‑connected appliances) - to design safe inlet connections and provide compliant instructions.
- Hose‑set and component suppliers - to ensure materials and fittings meet the backflow and mechanical integrity expectations.
- Installers and plumbers - for correct selection and installation of backflow prevention measures and hose connections.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - for evaluating compliance with EN 61770 requirements.
- Water utilities and regulators - to reference in guidance and national implementation to protect potable water supplies.
Related standards
- EN 61770:2009 and its earlier amendments (AC/A1/A11/…) - this prAC 2025 proposes modifications to that base standard.
- EN IEC 61010 - appliances for medical purposes are excluded from this standard where covered by the EN IEC 61010 series.
- CEN/TC 164 publications on water supply systems (context for backflow prevention).
