Abstract

This EN 50152-1 is applicable to single-pole and two-pole alternating current (a.c.) circuit-breakers which are:
- for indoor or outdoor fixed installations in tractions systems, and
- operated with an a.c. line voltage and frequency as specified in EN 50163.
NOTE 1 EN 50163 specifies the a.c. traction systems 15 kV 16,7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz. NOTE 2 As rails of a.c. traction systems are connected to earth and included in the return current path all phase to earth voltages will be within the tolerances as specified in EN 50163. Nevertheless phase to phase voltages are sometimes higher e.g. in autotransformer systems. This European Standard is also applicable to the operating devices of circuit-breakers and to their auxiliary   equipment. This European Standard does not address circuit-breakers with dependent manual operating mechanism. NOTE 3 It is impossible to specify a rated short-circuit making current for these circuit-breakers and it is likely that such dependent manual operation is not meeting safety considerations.

SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 50152-1:2012/A1:2013 for railway fixed installations. It amends the requirements for alternating current (a.c.) circuit-breakers with nominal voltage above 1 kV, including their operating devices and auxiliary equipment, for indoor or outdoor traction-system use. The amendment adds one rated operating sequence for 16,7 Hz circuit-breakers.

What does SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 specify?

SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 applies to single-pole and two-pole a.c. circuit-breakers used in fixed railway installations. The base standard covers equipment operated with an a.c. line voltage and frequency as specified in EN 50163, and it also applies to the operating devices and auxiliary equipment of those circuit-breakers.

The scope matters because it tells engineers and buyers which products fall under the standard: traction-system switchgear for indoor or outdoor fixed installations. It also makes clear that circuit-breakers with dependent manual operating mechanism are outside the addressed use case.

The document is structured as a short amendment. It has a foreword and one clause that changes clause 5.10, “Rated operating sequence [4.104]”.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013?

The amendment changes the rated operating sequence in clause 5.10. It adds a new sequence, written as O - t'' - CO, which is the main technical change in this document.

For 16,7 Hz circuit-breakers, the added interval is t'' = 5 s. In practice, this means the breaker’s operating performance has to be considered against this specific open-close operating pattern when the equipment is designed, specified, or tested.

The scope also sets the application limits that matter for selection:

  • The circuit-breakers are single-pole or two-pole a.c. devices.
  • They are intended for indoor or outdoor fixed installations in traction systems.
  • They operate at the a.c. line voltage and frequency specified in EN 50163.
  • The standard also covers the operating devices and auxiliary equipment associated with the breaker.
  • Dependent manual operating mechanism is not addressed.
  • The note in the scope explains that, for these traction systems, phase-to-earth voltages stay within EN 50163 tolerances, while phase-to-phase voltages can be higher in some systems such as autotransformer arrangements.

For users, this means the document is mainly about defining the operating behaviour and application boundary of the breaker, not a general-purpose switchgear standard.

What terms does SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 define?

a.c. means alternating current, the current type used by the circuit-breakers covered by the standard.

Single-pole describes a circuit-breaker that operates one pole per switching function, which is important when matching the device to the traction installation.

Two-pole describes a circuit-breaker that operates two poles, which affects how the device interrupts and isolates the circuit.

Operating devices are the parts that command breaker operation, such as opening and closing mechanisms.

Auxiliary equipment means the supporting equipment attached to the circuit-breaker, which must also fit the standard’s requirements.

Rated operating sequence is the prescribed sequence of switching operations used to assess breaker behaviour.

EN 50163 is the referenced standard for a.c. traction system voltages and frequencies.

Who uses SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013?

This standard is used by railway electrical engineers, switchgear designers, manufacturers, and test laboratories working on fixed traction installations. It is also useful for quality managers and purchasers who need to check whether a circuit-breaker and its operating equipment fit the railway application.

In practice, users rely on it when specifying breaker behaviour, preparing type tests, comparing products, or checking that equipment matches the traction-system conditions set by EN 50163.

What changed in SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 modifies EN 50152-1:2012. The change is in clause 5.10, where it adds the operating sequence O - t'' - CO and sets t'' = 5 s for 16,7 Hz circuit-breakers.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013?

EN 50152-1:2012 is the base standard that this amendment changes.

EN 50163 provides the a.c. traction system voltages and frequencies referred to in the scope, so it sets the operating environment for the circuit-breakers covered by the standard.

What does the SIST EN 50152-1:2013/A1:2013 document contain?

The document contains a foreword and one modification clause. The foreword identifies the responsible CENELEC committee and gives the implementation and withdrawal dates for national adoption.

Clause 1 is the only technical change. It amends the rated operating sequence in 5.10, so the practical content is focused on breaker operating behaviour rather than on a broad set of tests or product classes.

The amendment format makes the document compact: it is meant to be read together with EN 50152-1:2012, with this text applied as the update to clause 5.10.
