Overview
EN 13402-3:2017 - Size designation of clothes: Part 3 - defines a flexible European system for size labelling based on body measurements and intervals. Published by CEN, this standard describes how to present consumer-facing size information using the standard pictogram (see EN 13402-1). It provides examples of measurement tables and interval schemes (Annex A) for men, women, boys, girls, infants, and head/hand/foot sizing. Note: garment dimensions are not specified in this document.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Standard pictogram usage: Size information shall be shown at point of sale (labels, hangtags, packaging, websites) using the pictogram defined in EN 13402-1.
- Primary and secondary dimensions: Sizes are based on primary body dimensions (cm) and may include one or more secondary dimensions (cm or kg for tights). The standard allows flexible combination of dimensions to suit markets or garment types.
- Numeric and letter size designations:
- Numeric order: primary dimension first; for men/women height is typically in second position and other secondary dimensions third. For lower-body items, hip is primary and inside leg is secondary. For children, height is always the first dimension.
- Letter sizes: XXS → 3XL are defined as examples for garments with high fit tolerances (knitwear, sportswear).
- Intervals and ranges: Annex A gives example intervals between adjacent body measurements. Ranges for each size are calculated from interval values; when intervals are small (around 1.5–2 cm), only the centre value may be shown rather than a range to avoid overlap/gaps.
- Presentation rules: Dimensions in the pictogram are separated with slashes and marked by measurement lines; companies may choose arrows or straight lines. The pictogram should clearly indicate which body measurements are used.
Practical applications
- Create consumer-friendly size charts for retail and e‑commerce that reduce returns and increase conversion.
- Standardize hangtags, labels and packaging to improve cross-border clarity in the EU market.
- Inform pattern grading and specification sheets by aligning garment design to body-based size intervals.
- Support size communication for manufacturers, brands and private-label suppliers targeting diverse European populations.
Who should use this standard
- Apparel manufacturers and product developers
- Retailers and e‑commerce teams preparing size guides
- Technical designers, pattern graders and sizing consultants
- Labeling and compliance teams operating in Europe
- Standardization bodies and organizations harmonizing apparel sizing

Examples of measurement and interval tables A.1 General Examples of body measurements and their intervals for primary dimensions for size designation (see EN 13402-2) are given for men, women, boys, girls and infants. In addition, the secondary dimensions (see EN 13402-2) are given with the possibilities for a country/company to apply when needed. The possibilities are shown in the tables horizontally for each primary dimension value and vertically for each secondary dimension value. The arrows at the beginning and at the end of the table range indicate that other values are possible to increase or decrease the range. The arrows in the left frame column of the tables, indicate if other values are possible to increase or decrease the intervals up or down. Intervals between sizes can be linear, proportional or irregular. Range is recommended for use on the pictogram as described in Clause 5. Each country/company chooses to either follow below examples of tables with measurement and intervals, or build their own measurements tables as needed for their market. Using only the tables as a reference how to develop a measurement chart and specify it clearly to the end customer by adapting Clause 5 and labelling clothing with a standard pictogram.

The SIST EN 13402-3:2017 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the size designation of clothes, focusing specifically on body measurements and size intervals. Its primary objective is to establish a flexible sizing system that enhances consumer understanding through standardized size labelling. This is accomplished by utilizing a standard pictogram, which serves as a clear and visual guide for consumers to interpret garment sizes accurately. One of the significant strengths of this standard lies in its structured approach to body measurements. By offering detailed examples in Annex A, the document facilitates the compilation of garment sizes tailored for various demographic segments, including men, women, boys, girls, and infants. This inclusivity allows manufacturers to cater to a wider audience, ensuring that consumers can find garments that fit them better and meet their expectations in terms of comfort and style. Additionally, the document emphasizes the importance of consistent labelling practices, as highlighted in Clause 5, which provides specific instances of how clothing should be labelled with the standard pictogram. This not only aids in consumer education but also fosters greater trust in clothing brands that adhere to these guidelines, as they signify a commitment to transparency and quality. The relevance of SIST EN 13402-3:2017 is further underscored by the ever-evolving nature of fashion and apparel industries, where body diversity is increasingly recognized. By adopting this standard, businesses can align their practices with contemporary consumer needs, thereby enhancing their competitive edge in the market. Overall, the standard's focus on standardized body measurements and labelling makes it an essential reference for both manufacturers and consumers, paving the way for a more informed and satisfying shopping experience.
