SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 301 401 V1.2.6 for Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) that connects to public networks using ITU-T V-series physical and electrical interfaces. It specifies the connector arrangements, circuit assignments, electrical limits and test methods used to assess DTE that attaches to those network presentations.
What does SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 specify?
SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 specifies the technical characteristics for DTE interfaces to public networks presented at V.10, V.11, V.12, V.24/V.28, V.35 or V.36, regardless of data rate. In practice, it tells a manufacturer or test lab what the DTE must present at the public network interface so the terminal does not disturb the network.
The document applies to DTE used with circuit switched, packet switched, leased circuit, frame relay and SMDS services, plus other services presented on the same electrical interfaces. It is organized into clauses on scope, references, definitions, safety and EMC context, applicability, electrical/mechanical requirements, and test specification, followed by two normative annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Requirements Table (RT), including requirement status, connector options, circuit assignments and test selection support |
| Annex B | Physical layer implementation extra information for testing (PIXIT) |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004?
Interface scope and connector choice
Clause 5 and clause 6 tie the standard to specific DCE interface presentations and connector families. The DTE may use one of six connector types: 25-pole, 26-pole, 37-pole, 34-pole, 15-pole or 50-pole. For a buyer or designer, this means the mechanical interface is part of the compliance decision, not just the signal behavior.
Clause 6.2 also allows a manufacturer to declare an alternative means of connection in a format similar to the RT in Annex A. That matters when a product uses a proprietary connector or wiring scheme, because the implementation has to be documented and assessed against the same kind of requirement structure.
Circuit assignments depend on the DCE electrical presentation
Annex A shows that the required circuits change with the DCE type and connector type. For example, the 26-pole and 37-pole options distinguish between V.10/V.11 presentations and V.28 presentations, while the 15-pole connector is used for V.10 or V.11 and the 50-pole connector is used for V.12.
In practice, this means pin numbering and signal labeling have to match the declared network interface. The RT in Annex A is the place where the manufacturer states which mandatory and optional circuits are implemented.
Electrical limits are set by interface family
Clause 6.3 defines the generator electrical requirements for the main interchange circuit families. The standard gives separate open-circuit output voltage limits for V.10, V.11, V.12, V.28 and V.35, and it treats V.36 as using V.10 and/or V.11 characteristics as declared by the manufacturer.
This is important because the lab does not test a generic serial output. It tests the specific electrical family used by each signal, using the setup shown in the clause 7 figures.
Test conditions are controlled and repeatable
Clause 7.1 fixes the test environment, power conditions and test point. Tests are performed at 15 °C to 35 °C and 5 % to 75 % relative humidity, with the terminal powered on, and measurements are made at the DCE connection point. The applicant may need to provide representative cabling, bit patterns and Signal Element Timing.
That matters because the standard checks the real interface as used, not just a bench-top board. The test lab also relies on the declaration of which circuits are identically implemented and which generator states are fixed in operation.
Conformance uses both testing and declared implementation data
Clause 7.1.8 allows electrical characteristics to be verified by the listed tests or, by agreement, by a declaration of conformance with supporting design evidence. Annex B then captures extra implementation information needed for testing.
For a quality manager, this means conformance is not only a lab measurement exercise. It also depends on complete implementation data in the RT and PIXIT forms.
Test groups are selected from the declared support
Clauses 7.8 and 7.9 define the test selection expressions and the test case index. The RT entries drive which connector tests and which generator-voltage tests apply to a particular implementation.
What terms does SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 define?
- Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) - the terminal equipment covered by the standard, intended to connect to a public network interface.
- Data Circuit terminating Equipment (DCE) - the network-side equipment or interface that the DTE connects to.
- Packet Switched Public Data Network (PSPDN) - the packet-switched public data network referenced in the definitions.
- Requirements Table (RT) - the proforma that records which requirements are mandatory, optional or conditional for a specific implementation.
- Implementation Under Test (IUT) - the specific product sample being checked during testing.
- Physical layer implementation extra information for testing (PIXIT) - the annex B form used to capture implementation details relevant to testing.
- open-circuit generator voltage (Vo) - the voltage quantity measured in the electrical tests.
Who uses SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004?
Manufacturers of DTE use SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 when designing public-network interfaces, choosing connector types and assigning circuits. Test laboratories and conformity assessors use it to plan connector checks, voltage measurements and static conformance review.
Quality managers and buyers use it to confirm that a terminal is intended for the required V-series interface family, such as V.10, V.11, V.12, V.28, V.35 or V.36. It is also relevant where procurement or certification needs a clear statement of the declared interface presentation.
What changed in SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 combines and harmonizes the requirements of TBR 1 and TBR 2. It supersedes both documents for this category of DTE attachment requirements.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004?
- Council Directive 98/13/EEC - the regulatory basis for terminal equipment conformity and the essential requirements referenced by the RT.
- Council Directive 73/23/EEC and Council Directive 89/336/EEC - the safety and EMC directives referenced in the references section.
- ISO 2110, ISO/IEC 11569, ISO 4902, ISO 2593, ISO 4903 and TIA/EIA-613 - connector dimensions, mating form and contact numbering for the supported connector types.
- ITU-T V.10, V.11, V.12, V.24, V.28 and V.36 - the electrical characteristics and interchange-circuit definitions used by the interface tests.
- CCITT V.35 - the balanced interchange-circuit characteristics used for one connector family.
- ITU-T X.21, X.21 bis, X.25, X.2, X.26 and X.27 - the service and interface context used in the scope and definition sections.
- TBR 1 and TBR 2 - the predecessor requirements combined by this standard.
What does the SIST EN 301 401 V1.2.6:2004 document contain?
The document includes conformance tables in Annex A, with connector options, circuit-by-circuit assignments, conditional requirement logic and test selection expressions. It also includes test figures and procedures for generator voltage checks and connector checks in clauses 7.2 to 7.7.
Annex A is the main implementation record for static assessment and test case selection, while Annex B records extra implementation information needed by the test lab. The body of the standard also gives the measurement setups for the electrical tests, so the lab can reproduce the same interface conditions on the DTE under test.
