Overview

EN 50065-2-3:2003/A1:2005 (CENELEC) specifies immunity requirements for mains communications equipment and systems that transmit or receive signals on low-voltage electrical installations in the frequency range 3 kHz to 95 kHz. The amendment A1 (approved 2005) updates the original Part 2-3 immunity requirements and test methods for equipment intended for use by electricity suppliers and distributors. The standard focuses on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) between power-line communication (PLC) devices and the public low-voltage network; safety requirements are not included.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: equipment using signals 3 kHz–95 kHz on low-voltage installations; applies only to the communications function when equipment has additional functions.
  • Per-port immunity requirements: tests and limits are defined for signal ports, AC power input/output ports, and earth (functional ground) ports. Tests are specified for each port considered.
  • Disturbance types covered:
    • Continuous conducted and radiated disturbances (narrow-band and broadband)
    • Transient disturbances (fast transients)
    • Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
  • Representative test levels and changes in A1:
    • AC input/output immunity level amended (Table 4: change from 3 V to 10 V)
    • Earth port immunity (Table 5): RF common-mode 0.15–80 MHz at 3 V AM 80% (test level prior to modulation); fast transients ±0.5 kV (5/50 ns) using capacitive clamp where cable length > 3 m
  • Test methods and normative references: updates include replacing EN 50082‑1 with EN 61000‑6‑1 and adjustments to CISPR 16‑1 referencing. Annex A provides the test circuit arrangements and port connections for immunity testing.
  • Limitations: does not address immunity between systems operating in the same frequency band or signals from HV/MV power line carrier systems; extreme low-probability disturbance cases are outside its levels.

Applications

Who uses EN 50065-2-3:2003/A1:2005:

  • Manufacturers of mains communications equipment and power-line communication (PLC) devices designing products for utility networks
  • Electricity suppliers, distributors and asset owners specifying EMC performance for deployed systems
  • EMC test laboratories performing type-testing and conformity assessment of PLC and mains communication equipment
  • System integrators and compliance engineers ensuring interoperability and reduced mutual interference on low-voltage networks

Practical value:

  • Ensures reliable PLC operation and reduced mutual influence between different mains communication systems
  • Provides per-port test criteria to support type-testing and product certification for utility applications

Related Standards

  • EN 50065-1 (frequency band definitions and general requirements)
  • EN 61000-6-1 (replaces EN 50082‑1 as referenced immunity framework)
  • CISPR 16-1 (measurement standards referenced in the amendment)
