Overview

EN ISO 15877-2:2009 specifies requirements for PVC‑C (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) pipes used in plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations inside buildings - including domestic potable water and heating systems. It defines the material and geometrical characteristics, mechanical and physical performance, and the test parameters for verifying resistance to internal pressure, tensile and impact behavior, and long‑term service conditions. The part is one element of the ISO 15877 system standard for PVC‑C piping.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Applies to PVC‑C pipes under the design pressures and temperatures appropriate to the chosen application class. It does not apply where design or malfunction temperatures exceed values given in ISO 15877‑1:2009.
  • Material requirements: Defines requirements for PVC‑C pipe material and evaluation of strength parameters (σ‑values) used in design.
  • Geometrical characteristics: Specifies dimensions, wall thicknesses and tolerances, and appearance (including opacity and chamfering).
  • Mechanical performance: Covers resistance to internal pressure, impact resistance, tensile properties and long‑term performance under service conditions.
  • Physical and performance tests: Specifies test parameters for methods referenced (e.g., ISO 1167 for pressure resistance, ISO 6259 for tensile properties, ISO 2505 for longitudinal reversion, ISO 3126 for dimensions).
  • Marking and traceability: Minimum marking requirements to identify pipe type, size, material and relevant standards.
  • Compatibility and joints: Intended for use with PVC‑C fittings and joints with other plastics or non‑plastic components; adhesive use and related safety considerations are noted.
  • Health and regulatory note: Addresses potential influence on water intended for human consumption and advises compliance with relevant national regulations.

Practical Applications and Who Uses It

  • Manufacturers of PVC‑C pipes and fittings use the standard to design, produce and test products for building water supply and heating systems.
  • Specifiers and engineers select pipe series, application classes and design pressures for projects to ensure correct material performance.
  • Installers and plumbing contractors rely on the standard for acceptable pipe dimensions, jointing methods and marking requirements.
  • Testing and conformity bodies use the defined test parameters to verify compliance and fitness for purpose.
  • Regulators and building authorities reference the standard when assessing suitability under national rules for potable water and heating installations.

ISO 15877-2:2009(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
