Overview
EN 15254-4:2008/FprA1 - Extended application of test results from fire resistance tests - Non-loadbearing walls - Part 4: Glazed constructions - is a CEN guidance document that explains how to extend and apply fire-resistance test results for vertical fire‑resistant glazed elements. It defines procedures and restrictions for varying parameters of a tested glazed assembly (based on tests carried out to EN 1364-1) and for classifying performance in accordance with EN 13501-2. Extensions of scope are permitted only where supported by test evidence.
Scope highlights
- Applies only to vertically installed fire‑resistant glazed elements (glazed constructions in non‑loadbearing walls).
- Excludes doorsets and openable windows tested under EN 1634-1.
- Focuses on practical rules to vary size, aspect ratio, glazing product group and framing while retaining a test‑based classification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Guidance for when and how a tested glazed assembly may be used in alternate configurations without repeating full furnace tests.
- Definition update: “fire resistant glass” is treated as a glass product group (monolithic, multi‑layer or insulating glass unit) whose performance can be classified to EN 13501-2 when used in a glazed assembly.
- Rules on rectangular panes:
- Changes in aspect ratio, orientation (portrait ↔ landscape) and area are allowed under defined limits and only when covered by the reference tests.
- The area of a new pane is limited - it must not exceed the average area of the largest tested portrait and landscape panes.
- The largest tested width and height must not be exceeded.
- Test instrumentation detail corrected: sensor distance reference clarified to EN 1363-2 (1 m).
- Figure and framing details updated (framing, anchors, beads, seals and setting blocks) to clarify typical assembly components relevant to extended application.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 15254-4:
- Manufacturers of fire‑resistant glazed systems and insulating glazing units (IGUs)
- Façade engineers, architects and specifiers assessing glazed partitions and curtain wall fire performance
- Fire safety engineers, testing laboratories and certification bodies
- Building control authorities reviewing evidence for compliance with national/regulatory fire requirements
Practical uses:
- Justifying product variations (size, orientation, glazing type) based on existing test evidence
- Reducing need for repeat furnace testing when allowable extensions fall within the standard’s rules
- Informing design and procurement of vertical fire‑resistant glazed partitions and façades
