Overview

EN 13559:2003 is a CEN (European) standard that specifies the required properties and test methods for coextruded impact‑modified PMMA/ABS (acrylic/ABS) sheets used to manufacture domestic baths and shower trays. “Domestic purposes” includes residential buildings, hotels, student accommodation and similar facilities (excluding special medical installations). The standard sets performance, dimensional and durability criteria to ensure safety, appearance and long‑term serviceability of acrylic‑faced bath and shower panels.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Material construction: Coextruded sheet with an ABS substrate and an impact‑modified PMMA (acrylic) top layer.
  • Minimum thickness and tolerances: Minimum total sheet thickness is specified (minimum 2.7 mm). The standard defines thickness tolerances by nominal range to control manufacturing quality.
  • Top‑layer thickness: Minimum acrylic (PMMA) top‑layer proportion - 9% of total thickness for bathtubs and 4% for shower trays.
  • Thermal stability: Sheets shall show no blistering after a thermal exposure test (300 mm squares hung in a circulating oven at ~165 °C for 20 minutes).
  • Colour and colourfastness:
    • Top layer may be transparent or coloured; colourant must be integral through thickness.
    • UV resistance: Xenon arc exposure (250 h) with colour change ≥ grade 3 on the ISO 105‑A02 grey scale.
    • Hot‑water resistance: 100 cycles (60 °C / immersion/dry) with colour change ≥ grade 3.
  • Chemical and stain resistance: Resistance to common domestic reagents (e.g., 10% acetic acid, 10% NaOH, 70% ethanol, 5% NaOCl bleach, 1% methylene blue) without permanent staining or deterioration; a standardized cleaning device and procedure apply.
  • Resistance to wet/dry cycling and stress cracking: Procedures for wet/dry cycles and stress‑cracking tests are defined; time to first crack must be reported.
  • Regulated substances: Heavy metal limits referenced to Directive 91/338/EEC apply.

Test methods and references

EN 13559 references established test standards including prEN ISO 15015 (ABS/acrylic sheets), ISO 527 (tensile), ISO 75‑2 (HDT), ISO 179 (Charpy impact) and ISO 4892 (laboratory light exposure). Detailed procedures for sample conditioning, test geometry and result reporting are included.

Applications and who uses it

  • Sheet manufacturers: to certify extrusion and coextrusion quality.
  • Bath and shower fabricators / OEMs: to select compliant sheets and validate finished products.
  • Test laboratories: to perform mechanical, thermal, colour and chemical resistance testing.
  • Specifiers, procurement and regulators: to reference material performance requirements in specifications and approvals.
  • Architects and installers: to ensure durability and appearance expectations for domestic sanitary installations.
