SIST EN 61347-2-1:2002
(Main)Lamp controlgear -- Part 2-1: Particular requirements for starting devices (other than glow starters)
General Information
- Abstract
This part of EN 61347 specifies particular safety requirements for starting devices (starters other than glow starters and ignitors) for fluorescent and other discharge lamps for use on a.c. supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz which produce starting pulses not greater than 100 kV and which are used in combination with lamps and ballasts covered in EN 60081, EN 60188, EN 60192, EN 60662, EN 60901, EN 61167, EN 61195, EN 61199, EN 61347-2-8 and EN 61347-2-9. It does not apply to glow starters or starting devices which are incorporated in discharge lamps or which are manually operated. Preheat transformers for fluorescent lamps are covered by EN 61347-2-8. This first edition of EN 61347-2-1, together with EN 61347-1, cancels and replaces the second edition of EN 60926, published in 1995, and constitutes a minor revision. This standard shall be used in conjunction with EN 61347-1. It was established on the basis of the first edition (2000) of that standard.

Overview
EN 61347-2-1:2001 (CLC) is a European particular-requirements standard for lamp controlgear that covers starting devices (other than glow starters and ignitors) used with fluorescent and other discharge lamps on AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The standard specifies safety requirements for devices that produce starting pulses up to 100 kV and are intended to be used in combination with lamps and ballasts covered by related standards. EN 61347-2-1 is intended to be used together with EN 61347-1 and is based on IEC 61347-2-1.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Starting devices for fluorescent and other discharge lamps (excluding glow starters, ignitors, manually operated starters, or devices incorporated within the lamp).
- Voltage and frequency limits: a.c. supplies up to 1 000 V at 50/60 Hz.
- Maximum starting pulse level: 100 kV.
- Safety requirements
- Electrical insulation, clearing of fault conditions and protection against hazardous voltages during starting.
- Compatibility and combined use with lamp and ballast standards.
- Design and construction considerations
- Mechanical robustness, mounting and connection requirements suited to controlgear assemblies.
- Marking and information for safe installation and operation (to be used with EN 61347-1).
- Exclusions and special cases
- Glow starters and starters integrated into lamps are explicitly excluded.
- Preheat transformers are covered separately (see related standards).
Applications
EN 61347-2-1 is practical for manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and electrical safety engineers involved with:
- Design, testing and certification of standalone starting devices for fluorescent and discharge lamp systems.
- Product compliance and CE marking for lamp controlgear sold in the European market.
- Ensuring safe integration of starters with ballasts and discharge lamps in commercial and industrial lighting installations.
- Specifying procurement and acceptance criteria for controlgear used in lighting systems where high-voltage starting pulses are present.
Related Standards
Use EN 61347-2-1 in conjunction with:
- EN 61347-1 (general requirements for lamp controlgear)
- EN 60081, EN 60188, EN 60192, EN 60662, EN 60901, EN 61167, EN 61195, EN 61199 (lamp and ballast standards)
- EN 61347-2-8 (preheat transformers)
- EN 61347-2-9 Note: EN 61347-2-1 (first edition) superseded EN 60926 (second edition, 1995) as part of the harmonized controlgear series.
