Aerospace series - Paints and varnishes - Determination of solar absorptance

This standard specifies the method of test for determining the solar absorptance of paints and varnishes.
The test procedure determines the amount of energy reflected by the material in the range of wavelengths at which there is energy from the sun hitting the Earth’s surface, and with the aid of a standard solar spectrum it allows a calculation to determine the solar absorptance which can then be used to determine the efficiency of solar heat reflecting paints.
The procedure is applicable to products intended for use in aerospace applications.

Aeronavtika - Barve in laki - Ugotavljanje absorpcije sončne svetlobe

Overview

EN 4593:2011 - "Aerospace series - Paints and varnishes - Determination of solar absorptance" is a CEN standard that specifies a test method to determine the solar absorptance of paints and varnishes intended for aerospace use. The procedure quantifies the amount of solar energy absorbed by a coated surface by measuring spectral reflectance across the solar wavelength range and applying a standard solar spectrum. Results are used to assess the effectiveness of solar heat reflecting paints and coatings for thermal control.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Test method for paints and varnishes used in aerospace applications to determine absorbed solar energy.
  • Measurement principle: Record spectral reflectance of coated test panels and calculate solar absorptance by weighting reflectance with a standard solar spectral irradiance.
  • Wavelength range: Measurements cover the solar energy band (300 nm to 2 300 nm).
  • Apparatus: A recording spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere (specular included), 10°/diffuse geometry. Typical instrument performance requirements in the standard include:
    • Wavelength accuracy: ±5 nm
    • Measuring accuracy: ±2%
    • Bandpass: ~4 nm
  • Specimen preparation: Samples must be taken and prepared per referenced product and sampling standards; panels are coated, cured, thickness verified, and conditioned before testing.
  • Solar spectrum: Calculations use a standard solar spectral irradiance (CIE publ No 85) - commonly through two air masses unless otherwise specified by a product standard.
  • Test report: Must include product identification, references to EN 4593 and the product standard, supplementary details (substrate, application, curing, thickness, air masses used), test results, deviations, date, and operator name.

Applications and users

Practical uses:

  • Evaluate and compare solar heat reflective coatings for thermal control on aircraft and space-related hardware.
  • Support thermal management design by quantifying surface absorptance for energy-balance and heat-load calculations.
  • Quality control and acceptance testing of aerospace coatings during production and after formulation changes. Who benefits:
  • Aerospace coating manufacturers and formulators
  • Materials and thermal-control engineers
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Procurement, quality assurance, and R&D teams focused on reducing solar heat gain
