Overview
EN 3646-001:2015 is a European aerospace technical specification for bayonet coupling circular electrical connectors intended for continuous operation in the temperature range –65 °C to 175 °C or 200 °C (depending on class/model). It defines the general characteristics, design features, qualification and acceptance conditions, test programmes and quality-assurance requirements for these connectors used in aircraft electrical and interconnection systems.
Key SEO keywords: EN 3646-001, bayonet coupling circular connectors, aerospace connectors, operating temperature 175 °C, operating temperature 200 °C, connector qualification, connector tests.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Standardizes bayonet-coupled circular connectors for aerospace use (derived from MIL‑DTL‑26482 series 2 and intermateable with NAS 1599), focused on reduced mass/dimensions and smaller cable accommodation.
- Operating temperature classes: Continuous service to –65 °C up to either 175 °C or 200 °C depending on model/class.
- Design elements:
- Connector types: plugs and receptacles, multiple polarization keys/keyways, coupling ring with bayonet grooves.
- Contacts: crimp or solder contacts (sizes 20, 16, 12); ferrous alloy contacts for Model Y and copper alloy for other models, with gold plating over an undercoat.
- Housings: passivated stainless steel or light alloy with corrosion protection (nickel, black anodized, cadmium).
- Sealing: O‑rings, bonded interfacial seals, non‑removable grommets and inserts for cable sealing.
- Mechanical features: One‑piece housings, three teeth or full‑peripheral teeth for cable fittings, knurled coupling ring, grounding spring rings on selected models.
- Testing and qualification: Defines test programmes and groups, qualification, acceptance and quality assurance procedures to verify performance under environmental, mechanical and electrical conditions.
- Documentation and marking: Requirements for designation, marking, delivery, packaging and storage.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 3646-001:
- Aerospace and avionics manufacturers specifying high‑temperature circular connectors for wiring harnesses and equipment.
- Design and electrical engineers responsible for connector selection and integration.
- Procurement and supply‑chain teams ensuring component compliance.
- Test laboratories and quality managers performing qualification, acceptance and reliability testing.
- Maintenance and installation engineers following standardized installation, sealing and mating practices.
Practical value:
- Ensures intermateability with established aerospace connector families while offering lighter, smaller connector options.
- Provides a clear framework for testing, acceptance and long‑term reliability in harsh aircraft environments.
