Overview
EN ISO 14245:2021/FprA1 (Amendment 1 to ISO 14245:2021) is a CEN/ISO draft amendment that updates the specifications and testing requirements for self‑closing LPG cylinder valves. Prepared by ISO/TC 58/SC 2 in parallel with CEN, the amendment clarifies valve connection requirements, adds or revises test methods and pass/fail criteria, and tightens mechanical and marking requirements for valves used on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.
Key topics and technical requirements
The amendment focuses on practical, testable changes to valve design, testing and documentation. Major points include:
- Valve inlet connections: Must conform to an international/regional/national standard or be a proprietary design qualified to an acceptable industry procedure. Examples referenced include ISO 11363‑1 and ISO 15245‑1; qualification procedures are referenced in ISO 10692‑2.
- Secure fittings: New requirements that dip tubes and sediment tubes be securely fitted (e.g., adhesive, press‑fit or mechanical means) and that vent screw engagement allows metal‑to‑metal contact if seals are absent.
- Test program for configuration changes: Adds a matrix (Table 1) describing which inspections and tests (hydraulic pressure, valve stem leak tightness, impact, excessive torque, endurance, temperature leak tests, vibration, disassembly examination, etc.) are required when valve components or materials change.
- Test pressures and leak limits:
- Specified test pressures updated (see Table 3 in the amendment).
- External/internal leak rate limit: ≤ 15 cm3/h of air (corrected to 15.6 °C and 1.013 bar) at specified pressures and temperatures.
- Minimum test pressures called out in specific clauses (e.g., 45 bar minimum in one test clause).
- Mechanical and functional tests:
- Impact test: valves intended for use only with protection caps/guards require a minimum impact energy of 40 J.
- Strength/closure test: a minimum differential pressure of 30 bar applied to close the valve.
- Non‑return valve and vibration test clarifications, plus adjustments to inlet pressure requirements (e.g., 12 bar minimum in several tests).
- Marking: Valves must be permanently and legibly marked (forging, stamping, laser etch, etc.), including manufacturer ID, date code, “ISO” identification, outlet connection ID (e.g., G number per EN 15202) and “−40 °C” where applicable. Adhesive labels are not acceptable.
Applications and who uses it
This amendment is directly relevant to:
- Cylinder valve manufacturers and designers for compliance and product certification.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies executing type and production tests.
- LPG equipment suppliers, system integrators and safety engineers ensuring compatible and safe cylinder valve assemblies.
- Regulators and standards committees applying requirements in national regulations and procurement specifications.
Keywords: LPG cylinder valves, gas cylinders, self‑closing valves, valve testing, ISO 14245 amendment, leak tightness, impact test, pressure test, valve marking.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
