(Main)Electrical installations of buildings - Part 5-55: Selection and erection of electrical equipment - Other equipment
Electrical installations of buildings - Part 5-55: Selection and erection of electrical equipment - Other equipment
This part of IEC 60364 covers requirements for low-voltage generating sets. Particular
requirements for supplies for safety services are given in clause 556 while clause 559 applies
to the selection and erection of luminaires and lighting installations intended to be part of the
fixed installation. Electrical standby supply systems, other than for safety services, are outside the scope of this standard. This part of IEC 60364 does not apply for installations in hazardous areas (BE3). NOTE 1 Requirements of the public supply undertaking should be ascertained before a generating set is installed in an installation which is connected to the public supply. NOTE 2 For additional requirements for hazardous areas, see the IEC 60079 and IEC 61241 series.
Overview
IEC 60364-5-55 - Installations électriques des bâtiments (Partie 5-55) covers the selection and erection of “other equipment” in building electrical installations, with particular emphasis on groups générateurs (generating sets / generators). This part of the IEC 60364 series provides requirements and guidance to ensure safe, reliable installation and integration of generators and associated equipment into fixed electrical installations. The published consolidated version includes the first edition (2001) and Amendment 1 (2001).
Key topics and requirements
The standard addresses high-level requirements related to:
- Groups générateurs (generators and generating sets) - prescriptions for selection, siting and integration into building electrical systems.
- Supply of safety installations - specific provisions for powering safety circuits and installations (see article 556 for these particular requirements).
- Luminaires and lighting installations - guidance on the choice and installation of luminaires and fixed lighting systems intended to be part of the building installation (see article 559).
- Selection and erection principles for “other” equipment not covered elsewhere in Part 5: ensuring compatibility, protection, and safe operation within the fixed installation.
- Compliance and documentation - requirements to document equipment selection and connection arrangements consistent with the IEC 60364 series.
Note: This consolidated French-language publication derives from the original bilingual edition; missing pages correspond to removed English pages.
Practical applications
IEC 60364-5-55 is used to:
- Define safe installation practices for on-site generating sets (standby, emergency or prime power).
- Ensure correct supply arrangements for safety-critical systems (fire detection, emergency lighting, ventilation).
- Guide selection and installation of luminaires and fixed lighting within building electrical work.
- Support compliance checks during design reviews, construction inspections and commissioning of electrical installations.
Who should use this standard
- Electrical designers and consulting engineers specifying generator installations and fixed lighting.
- Electrical contractors and installers performing selection and erection of generators and luminaires.
- Building services and facility managers responsible for emergency power and safety systems.
- Inspectors, testing authorities and compliance officers validating installations against IEC 60364 requirements.
- Manufacturers and suppliers of generating sets and fixed lighting equipment referencing installation guidance.
