Overview

SIST ISO 11412:1998 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a method for determining the water content in calcined coke used in aluminum production. This standard focuses on measuring the moisture percentage in granular, fragmented carbonaceous materials and graphite-based solids employed in the aluminum industry. Accurate determination of water content in calcined coke is essential for quality control and optimizing production processes in aluminum smelting.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
ISO 11412 outlines a precise procedure for quantifying water content expressed as a mass percentage in calcined coke. It leverages a method based on drying samples at controlled temperature conditions followed by gravimetric analysis.

  • Testing Principle
The water content is determined by heating a weighed sample at (110 ± 5) °C until a stable weight is achieved, calculating moisture loss by the difference between pre- and post-drying mass.

  • Equipment Requirements

    • Drying oven capable of maintaining (110 ± 5) °C
    • Analytical balance with precision to 0.1 g
    • Aluminium drying trays approximately 300 mm by 500 mm with raised edges for sample containment
  • Sampling and Preparation
Samples must be prepared according to ISO 6375 to ensure representative and consistent testing. The material should pass through a 30 mm mesh sieve and be stored airtight in containers such as tin boxes to prevent moisture changes before testing.

  • Testing Procedure
The procedure includes drying a sample mass of 500 to 1000 grams in the oven, with successive weight measurements hourly until the change between weights is less than 0.1 g. This process ensures dependable moisture content reading.

  • Result Calculation and Reporting
Moisture content is calculated as a percentage of the initial sample mass and averaged over duplicate tests for accuracy. Test reports must include sample identification, method reference, moisture results, test date, unusual observations, and any deviations from the standard protocol.

  • Precision and Reliability
ISO 5725-1 principles are applied to ensure test repeatability and reproducibility. The standard defines acceptable limits for variation within and between laboratories for different water content levels.

Applications

SIST ISO 11412:1998 is critical for industries involved in the production of aluminum where calcined coke serves as a key carbonaceous material. Accurate water content determination directly impacts:

  • Aluminum Smelting Efficiency
Moisture influences coke performance in electrolytic cells; controlling water content helps optimize conductivity and reduce energy consumption.

  • Quality Control and Assurance
Consistent testing enables manufacturers to meet product specifications, ensuring raw material quality and process stability.

  • Material Handling and Storage
Understanding water content guides best practices for storage conditions to prevent moisture uptake or loss, preserving material integrity.

  • Process Optimization
Data from moisture testing supports process engineers in tweaking input parameters to improve yield and reduce defects.

Related Standards

  • ISO 6375:1980: Sampling of carbonaceous products used in aluminum production – defines procedures for obtaining representative samples for testing.
  • ISO 5725-1:1994: Accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results – principles for evaluating repeatability and reproducibility of test results.

The method described in ISO 11412 is based on the German standard DIN 51904:1981 and complements other standards addressing physical and chemical characterization of carbon materials in metallurgy.
