Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-84:2021/A11:2021 is a European amendment (A11) to the household electrical safety standard for toilet appliances. It applies to electric toilet devices with a rated voltage up to 250 V that store, dry or destruct excrement, or that wash or dry parts of the human body (for example bidet-toilet combinations, electric toilet seats with washing/drying functions, or incinerating toilets). This amendment updates Part 2-84 and supplements Part 1 requirements, clarifying hazards considered, marking and instructions, and the relationship with EU legislation.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and hazards: Deals with reasonably foreseeable hazards encountered by all persons. It generally does not cover children playing with the appliance or unsupervised use by very young children, while recognizing special needs of vulnerable users.
  • Rated voltage limit: Appliances covered operate at not more than 250 V.
  • Marking and instructions: Amendment A11 revises user information requirements - notably changing the age reference in instructions from “from 8 years and above” to “from 3 years and above”, and adjusts Part 2 text on instruction applicability for persons with reduced capabilities.
  • Normative references and tests: Annex additions include references such as IEC 60068-2-52 (salt mist, cyclic test), indicating relevant environmental test standards used in conformity assessment.
  • Harmonization with EU law: Annex ZZA maps clauses of the standard to the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive), supporting presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal.

Practical applications

Who uses this standard and why:

  • Manufacturers and product designers of electric toilet appliances - to design safe products and prepare technical files for CE marking.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform safety and environmental testing according to Part 1 and Part 2-84 requirements.
  • Compliance engineers and regulatory authorities - to assess conformity with the Low Voltage Directive and related EU requirements.
  • Specifiers and procurement teams - to verify that products meet recognized safety criteria for household and similar sanitary installations.

Typical product types covered:

  • Bidet-toilet combos and electronic toilet seats (wash/dry features)
  • Incinerating or composting toilets with electrical components
  • Electric toilet seat warmers and integrated hygiene systems

Related standards

  • EN IEC 60335-1 (Part 1: General requirements) - used together with Part 2-84
  • IEC 60068-2-52 (salt mist testing) - referenced for environmental testing
  • Applicable CENELEC national implementations and the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU)

This amendment is essential reading for stakeholders working on the safety, testing, and CE compliance of modern electric toilet appliances. Keywords: EN IEC 60335-2-84, toilet appliances safety, electrical toilet standard, Low Voltage Directive, CE marking.
