Overview
EN 60317-0-7:2017 (IEC 60317-0-7:2017) defines general requirements for fully insulated (FIW) zero‑defect enamelled round copper wire used as insulated wires for windings. This second edition (2017) replaces the 2012 edition and delivers a technical revision that narrows grade and diameter ranges and clarifies test criteria. It is intended as the baseline specification for manufacturers, test laboratories, OEMs and procurement professionals dealing with winding wire for motors, transformers, inductors and other electrical coils.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers dimensional, electrical and mechanical performance of FIW and specifies test methods and acceptance criteria. Major topics include:
Grades and conductor sizes
- Reduction of FIW grades in the main text to FIW 4, 6 and 8 (Annex A retains requirements for FIW 3, 5, 7 and 9).
- Nominal conductor diameter range for several requirements revised from (0.040–1.000) mm to (0.090–0.900) mm; Annex A covers diameters outside this range.
Electrical properties
- Electrical resistance requirements (Clause 5 revised; Table 2 resistance requirements deleted in this edition).
- Breakdown voltage: clarified so breakdown is determined when a calculated minimum test voltage is reached (may be less than 10 000 V).
Mechanical and thermal performance
- Elongation, springiness, flexibility and adherence, mandrel winding test and jerk test.
- Heat shock, cut‑through, resistance to abrasion and solvents, solderability and heat/solvent bonding.
- Temperature index, dielectric dissipation factor, resistance to transformer oil and pin‑hole testing.
Continuity and quality
- Off‑line and in‑line high voltage continuity tests for detection of insulation defects.
- Packaging and marking requirements to preserve FIW integrity.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 60317-0-7:
- Winding wire manufacturers specifying FIW product performance and testing.
- Motor, transformer and inductor designers selecting insulated wires used for windings.
- Quality, test and compliance laboratories performing mandated tests (breakdown, continuity, heat shock, mandrel winding).
- Procurement, OEMs and certification bodies ensuring purchased wire meets international requirements.
Practical benefits:
- Ensures consistent insulation quality for high‑reliability windings.
- Reduces field failures by specifying zero‑defect enamel and continuity tests.
- Supports material selection and supplier agreements with measurable test criteria.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
