Overview
SIST EN 15837:2010 is a European Standard issued by CEN that specifies a precise analytical method for determining the content of phosphorus, copper, and sulfur in ethanol used as a blending component for petrol. Utilizing Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES), this standard provides a direct quantitative approach to measure these elemental concentrations within defined ranges:
- Phosphorus: 0.13 to 1.90 mg/kg
- Copper: 0.050 to 0.300 mg/kg
- Sulfur: 2.0 to 15.0 mg/kg
The method ensures accurate quality control and compliance in fuel ethanol production and blending industries. It also emphasizes safety precautions inherent in using specialized instrumentation and volatile materials.
Key Topics
- ICP OES Technique: The standard focuses on ICP OES, a sensitive, direct emission spectrometry technique ideal for detecting trace elements in ethanol fuel blends.
- Elemental Determination Ranges: Specifies exact concentration ranges for phosphorus, copper, and sulfur relevant to fuel-grade ethanol.
- Sampling and Sample Preparation: Details sample collection using HDPE containers and preparation steps to avoid contamination, including ultrasonic homogenization.
- Calibration Procedures: Defines the preparation of calibration solutions with certified standards and the construction of calibration curves to achieve high accuracy and repeatability.
- Instrumental Parameters: Guidance on optimal wavelengths and background correction to minimize measurement interferences, crucial for reproducible results.
- Precision and Reproducibility: Provides statistical bounds for repeatability and inter-laboratory reproducibility to validate test performance.
- Safety and Compliance: Highlights the need for responsible use of hazardous materials and compliance with regulatory safety requirements.
Applications
SIST EN 15837:2010 is essential for laboratories, fuel manufacturers, and quality control entities involved in the production and use of ethanol as a petrol blending agent. This standard helps to:
- Verify the chemical purity of ethanol by quantifying impurity elements that may affect engine performance or emission standards.
- Support regulatory compliance by reliably measuring phosphorus, copper, and sulfur, which can influence catalyst poisoning and pollutant emissions.
- Improve fuel blend quality assurance, ensuring consistent additive composition in biofuel formulations.
- Facilitate inter-laboratory consistency by standardizing analytical methods for ethanol fuel testing across European nations and beyond.
Related Standards
SIST EN 15837:2010 complements various international and European standards related to petroleum fuel analysis and sampling, including but not limited to:
- EN ISO 3170 - Petroleum liquids Manual Sampling
- EN ISO 3675 and EN ISO 12185 - Density determination methods for petroleum products
- EN ISO 3696 - Specifications for laboratory-grade water used in analytical procedures
- EN ISO 4259 - Statistical methods for evaluating precision of test methods
These standards collectively ensure the reliability and comparability of test data for ethanol and related liquid fuels within fuel quality management frameworks.
