Overview

SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012 is a European and international standard that specifies a standardized method for determining the residual indentation in resilient and laminate floor coverings. This method measures the permanent deformation that occurs in flooring materials after a constant load has been applied and then removed. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and adopted by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard is essential for assessing the durability and performance of resilient and laminate flooring products.

Residual indentation testing is crucial for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and flooring specifiers to ensure product compliance with performance criteria and to predict long-term floor covering behavior under static loads.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application

    • Applies to resilient and laminate floor coverings.
    • Determines residual indentation following static loading.
    • Focuses on permanent deformation after load removal.
  • Test Methodology

    • Use of a cylindrical steel indenter with a diameter of 11.30 mm.
    • Application of a constant load of 500 N (pressure: 5 MPa) on test samples.
    • Measurement of initial thickness before loading and final thickness after a recovery period.
    • Conditioning test specimens at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for at least 24 hours.
    • Recovery period of 150 minutes after removing the load before measuring residual indentation.
  • Apparatus and Setup

    • Straight steel cylindrical indenter with a slightly rounded edge.
    • Rigid horizontal platform to hold specimens.
    • Comparator with accuracy of ± 0.01 mm for measuring indentation depth.
    • Thickness measurement device capable of 0.01 mm precision with specified loading masses depending on floor type.
    • Stopwatch for timing test durations.
  • Calculation and Reporting

    • Residual indentation calculated as the difference between initial and final thickness.
    • Test repeated on three specimens to compute a mean value.
    • Detailed report including product identification, test conditions, indentation values, and any deviations.

Applications

  • Quality Control
Ensures resilient and laminate floor coverings meet durability and performance standards for the flooring industry.

  • Product Development
Aids manufacturers in improving material formulations to minimize permanent deformation under load.

  • Building Specifications
Provides objective data used by architects and specifiers when selecting flooring materials for residential, commercial, and industrial spaces.

  • Compliance Verification
Helps confirm conformity with building codes and flooring standards related to wear and indentation resistance.

  • Consumer Confidence
Supports clear product labeling and reliable performance claims to end-users regarding floor longevity and maintenance requirements.

Related Standards

  • EN 433:1994
Previous European standard for determination of residual indentation, now superseded by SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012.

  • ISO 24343-2
Planned part covering the determination of short-term indentation in resilient and laminate floor coverings.

  • ISO/TC 219 - Floor coverings
The technical committee responsible for standards relating to resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings.

  • CEN/TC 134
European technical committee tasked with resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings standardization.
