Overview
EN 480-2:2006 - "Admixtures for concrete, mortar and grout - Test methods - Part 2: Determination of setting time" is a CEN European Standard that defines the reference method for measuring the setting time of mortar with and without admixtures. It adapts the setting time test described in EN 196-3 and permits equivalent alternative apparatus when they do not affect results. The standard specifies test conditions, apparatus (Vicat), specimen preparation, test procedure and reporting requirements for both initial and final setting time.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: penetration of a Vicat needle into a reference mortar until specified penetration limits are reached.
- Reference materials: mortar prepared according to EN 480-1; mixing water per EN 1008; water demand determined per EN 413-2.
- Laboratory conditions: normally (20 ± 2) °C and relative humidity ≥ 65 %; specimens stored at ≥ 90 % RH and at (5 ± 1) °C or (20 ± 2) °C as required.
- Apparatus:
- Vicat needle: non-corrodible metal, effective height (50 ± 1) mm, diameter (1,13 ± 0,05) mm.
- Total moving mass (including stopping device): (1 000 ± 2) g; vertical low-friction movement required.
- Hard rubber mould: truncated cone, depth (40,0 ± 0,2) mm, top/bottom diameters (70 ± 5) mm and (80 ± 5) mm; alternative mould shapes allowed if validated.
- Automatic setting meters may be used if shown to give equivalent results.
- Measured limits:
- Initial setting time: time from mixing until needle‑to‑base distance = 4,0 mm.
- Final setting time: time from mixing until needle penetration ≤ 2,5 mm.
- Manual Vicat: interpolation between time limits is allowed for overnight periods but is not permitted for comparative testing or when expected setting time is < 8 h.
- Test report must include: type of test equipment, test temperature (nearest 1 °C), and initial/final setting times expressed in minutes.
Applications
- Assessing the influence of chemical admixtures (set retarders, accelerators, water‑reducing agents) on mortar setting behavior.
- Quality control in mortar and grout production and R&D for admixture formulation.
- Ensuring compliance and comparability of setting-time data used in specification, performance evaluation and compatibility testing with cementitious materials.
Who uses this standard
- Admixture manufacturers and R&D laboratories
- Cement and mortar testing laboratories
- Construction material specifiers and quality control personnel
- Standards bodies and conformity assessment organizations
