Overview
prEN 15599-2 is the CEN draft standard that specifies requirements for installed in‑situ thermal insulation formed from expanded perlite (EP) products. It is Part 2 of the prEN 15599 series and focuses on the specification, on‑site verification and installer declarations for products used in building equipment and industrial installations. The standard covers expanded perlite product types (Perlite Aggregate – EPA, Coated Perlite – EPC, Premixed Perlite – EPM) containing less than 1% organic material and applies to operating temperatures approximately from −270 °C to +650 °C.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Defines installed product requirements for in‑situ expanded perlite insulation for building services and industrial installations.
- Clarifies that this Part 2 is non‑harmonised and complements Part 1 (product before installation).
- Thermal performance and thickness
- Requires calculation of required insulation thickness using the product’s declared thermal conductivity (λ) and the specified thermal resistance. The standard provides the calculation method to confirm suitability before installation.
- Installed thickness and tolerances
- The mean installed thickness must be at least the required thickness; no single measurement may be less than 80% of the specified value.
- Cavity fill and installation checks
- Installer must ensure cavities are filled as specified and verify cavity widths from design drawings or tests.
- In‑situ measurement and verification
- At least five thickness measurements per 100 m² of insulated area are required; methods include calibrated depth gauges and, in case of dispute, EN 823 (pin and plate method, Annex A).
- Installer’s declaration
- Mandatory declaration to the customer including: product trade name/designation, required thermal resistance, required and installed thickness, volume used, installation date and confirmation that the procedure was followed.
Applications
- Specifies practical requirements for installers, specifiers, contractors, thermal performance engineers and building inspectors who work with expanded perlite in‑situ insulation.
- Typical uses include insulation of piping, vessels, ductwork and plant equipment in industrial and building services contexts where high temperature ranges and granular/perlite systems are suitable.
- Useful for quality control on site, compliance documentation, and assuring thermal performance after installation.
