Overview
EN ISO 1483:2011 (adoption of ISO 1483:2011 by CEN) specifies the characteristics of slotted raised countersunk (oval) head tapping screws. The standard covers thread sizes ST 2,2 to ST 9,5 and defines head forms, dimensional limits, material and mechanical requirements, finishes, tolerances and acceptance rules for this family of tapping screws used primarily in sheet‑metal and thin‑section assemblies.
Keywords: EN ISO 1483:2011, slotted raised countersunk (oval) head tapping screws, tapping screws, ST 2,2, ST 9,5, fasteners standard
Key Topics
- Scope and thread range: Applies to slotted raised countersunk (oval) head tapping screws with thread sizes ST 2,2 through ST 9,5 inclusive.
- Head types and forms: Defines head variants (Type C, Type F, Type R) and associated dimensional gauges (see ISO 7721 for head configuration).
- Dimensions and preferred lengths: Specifies nominal and limit dimensions (head geometry, thread pitch, core diameters and preferred screw lengths) for each thread size.
- Materials and mechanical properties:
- Steel tapping screws in accordance with ISO 2702 (heat‑treated steel tapping screws).
- Corrosion‑resistant stainless steel grades per ISO 3506‑4 (A2‑20H, A4‑20H, A5‑20H).
- Product grade and hardness classes referenced in the standard.
- Finishes and coatings: Electroplating per ISO 4042, non‑electrolytically applied zinc‑flake coatings per ISO 10683, and passivation per ISO 16048.
- Tolerances and inspection: Dimensional tolerances per ISO 4759‑1; acceptance inspection criteria referenced to ISO 3269.
- Designation examples: e.g., "Tapping screw ISO 1483 - ST 3,5 × 16 - St - R" or "… - A4‑20H - R" for stainless variants.
Applications
- Used by fastener manufacturers to design and produce standardized tapping screws.
- Specified by mechanical, sheet‑metal and appliance designers for reliable fastening into thin materials.
- Employed by procurement specialists and quality/inspection teams to verify compliance and acceptance of supplied fasteners.
- Useful in industries such as HVAC, white goods, electrical enclosures, light automotive and general engineering where self‑tapping screws with a countersunk/oval head are required.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
