Overview

EN 14175-6:2006 - Fume cupboards: Part 6: Variable air volume (VAV) fume cupboards specifies requirements and type test methods for VAV systems used with laboratory fume cupboards. It defines additional performance, testing and on‑site verification requirements that complement Parts 1–4 of EN 14175. The standard is aimed at assessing VAV system behaviour when controlling extract volume flow across varying sash positions to ensure containment, safe operation and energy‑efficient ventilation.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope and purpose
    • Applies to VAV systems and fume cupboards equipped with VAV control (VAV fume cupboards).
    • Supplements the safety/performance rules of EN 14175‑2 and type and on‑site test methods of EN 14175‑3 and EN 14175‑4.
  • System features
    • System status port - means to indicate VAV status (position of dampers/regulators, measured/controlled values) for diagnostics and readouts.
    • Air flow indicator - visual and audible alarm required (per EN 14175‑2), e.g. red flashing light in operator’s visual field and remote relay capability.
  • Type test methods
    • Tests for air flow rate characteristics (sensitivity to downstream/static pressure changes, minimum operating pressure difference).
    • Dynamic control behaviour tests - response time, control stability during sash movement and set‑point transitions.
    • Tests can be performed on VAV systems alone using a standardized test box or on combined VAV fume cupboards; results are valid for the tested combination.
    • Test equipment and flow measurement methods reference EN 12589:2001 and EN ISO 5167‑1.
  • On‑site tests and reporting
    • On‑site methods cover extract volume at set points, response time, containment and minimum air‑exchange at minimum flow.
    • Requirements for product manual, marking/labeling and standardized type and on‑site test reports.

Applications and Users

  • Who uses this standard
    • Fume cupboard manufacturers validating VAV designs and producing type test reports.
    • Laboratory facility managers and purchasers specifying fume cupboards with energy‑efficient VAV control.
    • Test laboratories performing type and on‑site verification of containment and control performance.
    • HVAC engineers and installers integrating VAV fume cupboards into building ventilation systems.
  • Practical value
    • Ensures predictable containment performance across sash positions.
    • Enables energy savings via controlled extract flows while maintaining safety.
    • Provides clear diagnostic and alarm requirements for safe operation.
