Overview

EN 2591-605:2002 (Aerospace series) defines a standardized test method for measuring return loss of optical connection elements and fibre optic couplers used in aerospace electrical and optical interconnection systems. Published by CEN and prepared by AECMA, this part (605) is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (General test methods) and specifies the “coupler method” measurement sequence, required equipment and specimen preparation needed to produce repeatable, comparable return-loss data.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of return loss for optical elements, including permanent connections and fibre optic couplers, under standard test conditions.
  • Specimen preparation: Fit normal accessories, terminate as per product standard, stabilise at standard conditions for 24 hours (per EN 2591-100). State cable/fibre type and length, permitted return loss (dB) and coupler characteristics.
  • Required apparatus:
    • Light Launch System (LLS) and Light Detector System (LDS) as defined in EN 2591-100.
    • Optical fibre Y-coupler with known splitting ratio Ki,j (example: K = 0.5 for a 3 dB coupler).
    • Refractive-index matching liquid for port immersion.
  • Measurement method (Coupler method):
    • Adjust launch conditions (spot diameter and numerical aperture), connect coupler to LLS/LDS.
    • Measure baseline reflected power (Po) with the coupler port terminated in matching liquid.
    • Insert the specimen and measure reflected power (P1).
    • Reconfigure as specified and measure transmitted power (P2) with the relevant port immersed.
  • Calculation: The reflection coefficient is derived from the measured powers P1, P2 and Po together with the coupler splitting ratio K; return loss (RL) in dB is then given by RL = -20·log10(reflection coefficient).
  • Important considerations: Wavelength-dependent refractive index, accurate coupler characterization, and careful fibre handling (minimum bend radius) to avoid measurement artefacts.

Applications and users

  • Aerospace manufacturers and suppliers verifying optical connector and coupler performance for aircraft and spacecraft interconnect systems.
  • Test laboratories performing qualification, acceptance and production testing of optical connection elements.
  • Component designers and quality engineers needing standardized, repeatable return-loss data for product specifications and compliance.
  • Systems integrators ensuring reliable optical links where low reflection (high return loss) is critical for signal integrity.
